Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

Does anyone know if a camaro windshield wiper moter and pump will bolt up to a trans am? I've got a 1988 GTA that I put and engine and harness in from an IROC. everything fits but the windsheild wiper connections.

thanks in advance!

Camaro - Firebird = same.
82 - 92 = different.

As long as it's the same year, it's the same setup.

well my harness is from a 85/86 IROC I've got a 88 gta, I'm wondering if a 85/86 will bolt on to the firewall and connect to the wiper arms okay...

tryinig to match the harness to the wipermotor.

Re: Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

IIRC.
1982-1987 the windshield washer pump is located at the motor, I want to think that starting around 1988 the pump was relocated to the reservoir.

I would have to look at the IPC to determine the differences from year to year... I will check tomorrow to tell you the exact years...

Okay... I've got a 1988 GTA... the engine wiring harness is from a 1987 IROC.

so the plugs don't match.

Can I bolt a 1987 Washer motor and pump assembly to a 1988 without and problems? Just trying to get a plug match hopefully the easiest way.

Re: Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

I would think that would be the simplest course of action... of course you would have to locate a reservoir from an 1987 Here are some things that you will have to keep in mind.

1) With TPI, the Camaro and Firebird had the battery on opposite sides... The Firebird has the battery on the Drivers side, and the Camaro has the battery on the Passenger side...

2) The Firebird (with TPI) with Cruise control used a different reservoir that cars without Cruise. The reason is pretty obvious, once you start looking at it, but there is no better place for the Cruse module that hooks up to Vacuum...

3) The pumps are as follows, (For Firebird)
82 - 83 used pn 22071780
84 - 87 used pn 22049373 (it is technically a kit)
88 - 92 used pn 22071428

4) The W/S Washer containers are as follows:
82 - 84 pn 10078368
85 - 87 pn 10035811 - W/ Cruise K34 (w/o Low Fluid ind CD2)
85 - 87 pn 10035834 - W/ K34 & CD2
85 - 87 pn 10078368 - W/O K34 & CD2
85 - 87 pn 10078369 - W/CD2 (w/o K34)
88 - 92 pn 22072750
88 only pn 22072752 - W/CD2

Keep in mind the LG4 in 1987 also used the 10078368 reservoir on the firebirds...

Wiper Motors are as follows:
82 - 83 pn 4961908
84 - 87 pn 22072790
88 - 92 pn 22072788

Wiper motor Cover kits
84 - 87 pn 22039683 - W/O Pulse CD4
84 - 86 pn 22039684 - W/Pulse CD4
88 - 90 pn 22063288 - W/O CD4
88 - 90 pn 22101361 - W/CD4
91 - 92 pn 22063289
87 Only pn 22063204 - W/ CD4 - Cover only
88 - 92 pn 22101360 - Cover only

I hope that all helps...

Re: Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

The early wiper motors and pumps are crap. Before I went through the trouble of reverting to a poor substitute, I'd break down the old and new harness, and just patch the wiper motor wiring from the original harness into the new donor harness. It's a bit of a mess, and time consuming, but it'd cost less and it'd save the time and the what if's.

Re: Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

I would be inclined to agree with Drew... Although I have not had any problems with my 87, I do know that with the pump at the motor, my cover is broken, at least cracked, the pump stays in ok, but it is not as nice as the later cars with the pump on the bottle.

Re: Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

Is it a straight change ? I mean, are there as many wires on the 84-87 harness as on the later ones ? I'm about to buy an '89 parts car, and I noticed the connector is completely different from my '84 wiper motor.

Re: Trans am vs Z28 Wiper motor

In the case of taking a car, and using a different car's harness, it makes more sense to remove the wiring for the wiper motor from the original harness, and pinning it into the connector at the firewall. Reason being that the dash harness/interior harness side of the connector, is already pinned for the later setup. It'd be silly to go buy MORE parts, just to go backwards. It's really not difficult stripping old electrical tape off a harness, and removing the pins from the connectors. It's just time consuming and a little dirty.
