Alternator tested ok but is it working?

I have a 1987 iroc-z 5.7 alternator it's wiring... when the cars running it shows 14 volts but when i pull the battery cable the engine shuts off... someone was telling me that some alternator have built in safety default? I took it in and had it tested it passed every test on the machine they put it on including the internal regulator which i suspected to be the culprit... So my only question is do they have some sort of safety default? like i said once the cable is pulled the engine dies...

Alternators don't work without a battery.

Re: Alternator tested ok but is it working?

Never tried that with a CS style alternator or other
modern design alternator, but i know the old Si style
will continue to run the vehicle if battery removed with
engine running-make sure to do it at a low idle though
as the voltage can get unstable with the battery out of
circuit. My old '71 saab has a warning sticker on the
fenderwell that says the alternator will be"destroyed"
if battery disconnected while engine running...

Re: Alternator tested ok but is it working?

I also have an 87 that does the same. The cooling fan relay system shares a circuit with the three wire plug going into the rear of the alternator. I learned this because in addition to having a charging problem, I also learned that my entire coling relay system was missing (fans were both hard wired to run constantly). Through factory schematics it showed that one could affect the other.

My parts order comes in tomorrow and over the next week, I'll hopefully have the fans correctly wired and the alternator working again. I'll forward the wire colors next time I have access to my book.
