another vats issue

ive done alot of searching on here and it has helped alot but now i am stuck. Car wont start and its leaning towards vats. 89 rs 305 tbi, when held in crank the only noise to be heard is the temp needle pegging out. No start signal going to starter. Found enable relay, the cover falls off of it so i held the contacts together, car cranks but will not start (no injector pulse) key measures out at 9.47 k ohm (9470) this seems to be in range for #14 key as far as i can tell. The resistance shows through on the key sense wires with the key in the ignition and through all positions of the key without any fluxuations. Security light stays on when the key is in run or start but never flashes. Have code 53. Starting to think its the vats module itself, anyone have wiring diagrams and or function tests to test the module itself? Or anyone interested in burning me a vats delete? price?

Re: another vats issue

the ecm is under the dash on the passenger side. You will need a 7mm nut driver to remove the screws that hold the ecm bracket to the dash frame cross member. You will need to use a volt ohm meter with a hz setting and check the signal to the ecm pn the ecm pin B6 purple wire.

Re: another vats issue

I will check the signal but I'm pretty sure there will be none because it is not commanding the start enable relay either. Looking more for pin out and diagnostic for the vats module itself

Re: another vats issue

Where is the vats module located? All fuses check good but the labeling on them is gone and so is the owners manual so a view of the fuses would be great also.

Re: another vats issue

Wow, so I take it the connectors plug in directly to the module too so that the only way to test it is to dissemble. Are the modules known to act up intermittently also? Are the key pellets known to act up besides the contacts (resistance change)?

Re: another vats issue

the module usually isnt the issue it is usually the pellet contact or resistance going out of range due to heat or cold not enabling the passkey module. The module can fail.

Re: another vats issue

So the pellet is affected sometimes? It can go out of range?

Re: another vats issue

No if pellet is bypassed with resisters the resister can go out of range. I had a friend who battled this for months just in the winter before he discovered what it was.

There is no bypass, the chip reads good and in all key positions but no start.

Re: another vats issue

I thought i read on here somewhere that if the vats senses a wrong key it will flash the security light. O wel any way i also thought i read on here that the vats can fail after car was running and be allowed to keep running and restart. so i thought maybe i could trick it by putting gas in the tbi and starting it. It starts and runs as long as i play with the throttle (but very poorly) till it runs out of gas, i can get it to run for a few minutes. The security light stays on. I wanted to get it to start one last time so i could move it into my garage then tear the hell outta her. i have a pile of things that need done to this car and i would like to do this part as cheeply as possible. Thinking a bypass module would be the easiest.

Have no idea if its a good product or not, it would be used to replace the passkey module.

Re: another vats issue

Woot woot, it worked. My suggestion to anybody having vats issue. Bypass! Its cheap and fast, makes me sick thinking how many hours I have in diagnosing this thing just trying to save acouple bucks instead of just putting a bypass in.
