new to thread, need electrical help

Hey guys,

I have a 1989 five speed 2.8l rs.

I was driving the other day worth my battery gauge pegged complete negative, and then shut off. I had this problem a couple of times before where I would park and turn it off. I would come back and it wouldn't start. Nothing would happen, no crank, no click, not anything. I was verifying all of my grounds yesterday and cleaning them. The battery is brand new. I was troubleshooting when I found a completely melted fuse in my box. I don't mean burnt out, I mean literally melted. The person who had it before me straight wired the fan and I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The shadetree method of fan control often advised by some less intelligent members on here. One way to get a insurance claim on your car

The fan power should at least be run through a relay because of the heavy current it draws it can / will burn things out as you found out.

Absolute Min .A wire from the battery through a relay to fan , this powers the fan.

Fan control
Can have fan turn on with key and run fulltime ( not recommended shade tree method)
Can have fan operated by a thermo switch in the engine.
Can have fan operated as stock by the computer

Well it literally melted the fuse box(the 20amp slot). So I was thinking about disconnecting it from the back of the box and connect it to an in line fuse. So I should connect a relay in line under the hood. Got it.

Re: new to thread, need electrical help

We just had this discussion the other day in another thread. This is how I made my control for the fan. Stock temp sensor and stock relay.

It has no item in the link. This will work, but you may still have one on your engine.
http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/...FUxgMgodm1gALQ
Or this one, it has one wire and ground through the unit.
http://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto...ml?3593=319374
The ingition hot and temp sensor wires hook to 85 and 86, battery is 30, and fan hot is 87 in the link vette provided

Re: new to thread, need electrical help

Both of those units in my post are what trips the relay. It goes in a port in the intake before the thermostat. As I said before, you probably still have the old one in the intake. It may be faulty,or the relay, maybe the wiring.(which ever reason the previos owner rigged it that way for IDK) There is another sensor for the temp guage in the head that is wired separate.

One more question, where would you suggest tapping into my coolant sensor at? So that I can wire it to the relay

Re: new to thread, need electrical help

I'm only answering this after doing it twice before because I have had two teenagers and I'm used to it. There is a treaded hole by the thermostat housing in the intake, that would be where it goes. You may still have one in there.
It is the shiny brass sensor in the pic.
The wires in the guys hand have nothing to do with it, just a pic from the web.

Re: new to thread, need electrical help

So I finally got some time off to wire up the fan. I can't get it to work though. I wired it up to the relay and verified voltages present on the relay at the inputs. I just can't figure out why the relay isn't tripping to turn on the fan. I have verified that the fan does work. Where should I go from here?

Re: new to thread, need electrical help

If everything is wired into the relay correctly, I would be testing voltages on it. In, out, and the signals. Try jumping the two wires that the temp switch would close the circuit on and listen for the relay to click. Check for hot coming out. Is it a new relay, or the old one? It may have been the reason the PO rigged the fan.
