autometer speedometer messing up
I just put an LS1 4L60e in my 89 Camaro and I made a gauge cluster with electronic autometer ultra lite gauges. All of them work fine but the speedometer. It worked for about 100 miles then now it jumps all around. I tried new ground, pwr, and wiggling wires and seems to not change anything. I hooded the to my obd2 port and our scanner shows the right speed so I don't think it is a sensor.
anyone run across this before? im thinking the gauge is bad?
is sucks because when Im driving at like 40 the speedo is jumping up to 140 to 160 and putting miles on the clock really fast.
The problem also seems to be worse then when it started. it does it more and spends more time around the 160 mark.
Any help would be great, thanks

if you think its your auto meter part. send it in to Auto Meter.
full check out.. even installing a new Face. make over to New like.
cost me $30 Shipped.. give them a call
I buy a lot of Auto Meter stuff and send it in.to have it made new..
never cost more then $30... give them a call
have sent in $500 Tachs that are beat.. made new... cost $30... I run nothing but Auto Meter.
buy them cheap! $40 spend $30.... you know the rest 100% new!

Re: autometer speedometer messing up
Did you go through the calibration process? That sounds like a connection issue...even though it sounds like you checked everything out real good.
Or it sounds like something is shorting. Where/how did you connect the speedo to the PCM? Make sure where the wires are coming into the car from the speed sensor there are no cuts or shorts.
Otherwise, yeah send it over to Autometer. They will def take care of you. One of the better companies Ive ever had to deal with since building my car.

Re: autometer speedometer messing up
I connected to the VSS output. the pin that was used for the original speedo in the ls1 car. I did the calibration set up and it worked fine... for a little bit (like 100 miles) and then it just started jumping around at slow speeds, like under 40 but now it does it moving any speed.
I did send it back today. Since I tried new pwr, ground, and even tried getting the signal strait from the VSS like the autometer instructions said. Still the same thing. Ill let you know when I get the new one back and if that was the problem.

Re: autometer speedometer messing up
well I got my new speedometer today and hooked everything up with the same problem. I hate that I sent back a good speedometer. I don't know what to try now.
Since It worked for a little while before and the only things that I can think of that is different is I didn't have my amp on at first so maybe that is interfering with it behind the radio.
My alternator was not working right at first and I got a used one from a friend and it works right but not sure if that would do anything? I have like 14v at the speedo. Not sure if that is too much voltage?
or maybe try twisting the ground and signal wire together to avoid interference.
Any ideas??

Re: autometer speedometer messing up
its not soldered from the computer to the speedometer. I have taken apart my connection and put different connector in and that didn't help. Maybe I can try to solder it?
I worked on it again for hours tonight. I tried everything short of a new computer. I did different powers, and grounds. Even different alternators because I have read that a bad alternator will mess with at speedometer. I also twisted my ground and sig wire with no result either. Tomorrow ill try soldering the connection.

Re: autometer speedometer messing up
Well its fixed finally. After many emails with autometer we finally figured it out. What fixed I was splicing in a ground wire to the low vss (pin 20 red connector) I guess the computer wasn't giving the sensor a well enough ground and it was messing up the signal to the speedo. Not sure the problem is internal in the computer or if its my grounds from the computer are not that bad.
I would just like to thank the guys from autometer and not giving up on it. I drove the car today with no problems. Its getting cold and crappy out so I wont have much more time to drive it but ill let you know if that does not fix it for good.

Re: autometer speedometer messing up
Im having the same issue as you and gave up before I got as far as you. Ended up getting a gps for the speedo but it drives me nuts having it. Where did the ground wire got to off the pin 20?
