90-92 Speedometer Bench Testing - WIP

I had a post on FB trying to figure out this but was banned for posting a meme of michael jackson eating tide pods. Commie FB scum.

Anyways, I purchased a used speedometer off a kid online and when I put it in a while ago the speedometer stops climbing at 79mph. Suspecting the speedometer, since my original 110mph worked fine. I'm looking at a way to first benchtest the speedo, then figure out how to repair them properly since Hawks speedo guy is MIA.

Forewarning, it's been about 10 years since I messed with sine/square waves in a lab environment so feel free to add any information, may have forgotten something here or there.

Here's the outline of necessities to figure out:
1) Need source power (12-14v DC)
2) Need frequency generator (Square wave, not Sine)
3) Need oscilloscope to verify signal prior to going to speedo
4) Input Amplitude (volts) assuming anywhere from 0-5v max
5) Input Pulse Width
6) Input Cycle Time 0-145mph


I'll update this thread as I pioneer my way through this first using a spare 110mph cluster in case I blow something up LOL. Once that's figured out we'll have a way to diagnose the speedo

Working on a buy list for the equipment needed trying to keep it as economical as possible. So far, at $132 for all the equipment. Stuff should be in next week



Here are some of my notes so far, whether relevant or not to the cause

Sensor on trans is an AC sine-wave generator
4 pulses per one sensor revolution

VSS Buffer Box
This sine-wave from the trans is sent to the VSS buffer box which converts it to a square-wave then sends to the cluster



90-92 Speedometer needs
4000 pulse per MILE input
SQUARE WAVE


1 Mile = 5,280 feet
10mph = 10.66fps
30mph = 44fps
50mph = 73.33fps
100mph = 146.667fps


T56
17 teeth on output shaft
17 VSS pulses PER drive shaft revolution
VSS output pulses per mile= 4000

I received the 12v adjustable psu, jumpers, oscope and freq generator.

Didn't realize I needed to build the freq generator that took me about 1-2hrs, but eventually got it to work kinda.


What's weird is both the wire for the tach and the speedo must be hooked up at the same time to both outputs on the freq generator or it doesnt work at all. Need to do some more investigation but depending on the range, it does make them both sweep from 0-MAX on both the tach and speedo, so success?

I need to buy a C1/C2 connector off someone so I can make an adequate test setup instead of 100 jumpers everywhere, will make a separate post to see if anyone wants to sell a set

Took this video at like 1am last night, so still more studying to do on this unit

I created a php script that when plugging in a few variables generates the expected frequency on the VSS and input to the cluster, not sure if anyone wants to check the math/logic, will update the thread as I continue testing/verification.

Ordered a different frequency generator and better oscope to better test the cluster. Still not sure why the freq generator only works when I have the square wave wire plugged into the speed prong and sine wave wire plugged into the tach prong.

If I remove the tach prong, the speedo stops working. Maybe a bad 2nd hand cluster? I'll attempt to verify with the better generator/oscope Friday and post the results


Note this is for a 1992 Camaro RS with 3.08 gears to test the 110mph speedo.

Re: 90-92 Speedometer Fix - WIP

I'm a little confused as to if my calculations on the 4000ppm are incorrect, or if the speedometer itself is just old and not very accurate anymore.

Received the new OScope and Signal generator, and although were much more expensive, they work flawlessly for testing.

Just a note, here's a video for testing the speedo operation. The odometer is driven via a small 4 wire motor that's actuated via the chip under the speedo. The chip takes in the 4000PPM signal and converts to something the motor uses to turn the needle.
