Possibly vats ?

So i have a 1990 camaro, i swapped my steering column for a 92 steering column cause with mine the steering knuckle broke. Everything went along smoothly ,easy replacement but 1 plug was different from mine. It was missing some wires in the connector so something wasnt gonna work. When i go to crank it , nothing happens .some dash lights turn on and the temp.needle goes out of wack. Could that plug missing some wires be my problem ? I bought a new ignition for it with the key my car is supposed to have ,key#5. So right now im stuck and was wondering if anyone could help or had the same problem amd could guide me in the right direction

When you turn thw key does the security come on and stay on? When you had a new key made with the chip did you have your old one tested to make sure the new key was made with the correct chip?

Did the new ignition tumbler have an orange wire on it with a plug?

Re: Possibly vats ?

Yeah it is. Confirm if the security light is on. If its not it might just be an adjustment of the ignition switch on the column that the tumbler pushes with the metal rod. This will also cause no start if its not adjusted correctly.

so the security light turns on but i don't hear the fuel pump turning on. Im going to mess with the rod and get it to turn with the key

So there are 2 rods , theres one that is turning with the key and the other that isnt .the one that isnt turning is is touching something that resembles a button.is that how its supposed to be ?

Re: Possibly vats ?

Lets start with the basics.

Your security light comes on with the ignition. Does is stay on or turn off with the ignition on?

Re: Possibly vats ?

Ok so you do have a vats problem.
forget about anything except vats.
Double check your vats connector and double check your keys.

Re: Possibly vats ?

What is the security light supposed to do when there is no problem? And does that also explain why the fuel pump isnt turning on with the key in the on position ?

Re: Possibly vats ?

It comes on for 2 seconds then shuts off. If it stays on then VATS is enabled and cuts power to the fuel pump and doesnt energize starter enable relay.

Re: Possibly vats ?

I would start with the key then work downward.
next would be the ignition tumbler.
do you still have your old ignition?

Re: Possibly vats ?

Only way to truly bypass is to have a new chip made with vats disabled and the starter enable relay.

Re: Possibly vats ?

Since you dont have the original tumbler what I would do is check the old key and new key and make sure they are the same. If they are then make sure the wires coming from the new tumbler are ok and not broken. (Unplug the wire from under the dash and with the new key in the ignition check for continuity) this will tell you if your wires and key are all intact and operating
