I have a Metra power antenna mounted to replace one that was bent and stuck up on my 1987 Iroc-Z, but having some trouble wiring it in. The existing harness was wired grey, green, and white, but the new antenna came with red (unswitched power), blue (switched power) and black ground. Is there a way to splice the red and blue wires into the existing wiring harness for the relay? Thanks for the help.
I was about to give you s**t for your unhelpful response, but then I saw the Amazon link. I've been looking for that for weeks and keep finding the same one as I have, or one that looks exactly the same. They say direct fit but in the small print say they may need some modification - which is adding about 6 inches to the mast and they're wired completely different
Ordered the crown one - should make install a lot easier.
Unfortunately Crown seems to have forgot that this fits F body's. They sell it for Jeeps and don't list that it fits our cars. I have one in my Trans Am. Works like factory and same wiring.
I installed the Crown antenna this week. The quality seems good and it clipped right in to the relay and even included the rubber grommet. It sticks a little and needs help going up and down some times, but it's in and I can drive it now.
Huh. Mine doesn't stick at all. Maybe try lubing it with some lithium grease. Also check that you are getting good power to it. I can imagine a voltage drop might hurt it's performance.
Question. So my GTA has a "garbage" aftermarket power antenna that was installed last year, and it's already crapped out! Jeebus. As part of the install, the relay was removed and it has the red/blue/black wire configuration going to the unit. I tested the power on the On/Off blue lead, and it's good. So....once an aftermarket antenna has been installed, and the relay removed, would it be a massive undertaking to replace it with the Crown? Or, since my car is already down the road of cheap-aftermarket, should I just accept what I have and replace with another aftermarket....?
Definitely put the wiring back to stock and put the factory style antenna back in. That's what I did on my 86 TA. Mine also had a failed aftermarket in there. My relay was intact they just stole switched power from the interior dome lighting. I wired it back to the relay and I did have to splice the coax antenna line to get that back to stock. Someday I might swap in a stock coax from my parts car. The way I have mine setup though, I lopped off the harness for the antenna and put in a weatherpack connector on the outside of the fender wall right next to the antenna. So now if I need to change the antenna, I just pull down the fender liner, unplug it and unbolt the coax from the mast and plug in the new one (after crimping on a matching weatherpack). No interior panels removed or fishing wire or messing with the grommet.
The Crown antenna from Amazon lasted about 2 weeks before crapping out on a road trip when it got stuck halfway down - or halfway up. It sounds like it slipped the gear so at some point I'll pull it again and try to rebuild it. Until then it's disconnected and in the down position.
It does look good. Plugged it in to see if its DOA. Still need to install it though...we will see. Of course when i reconnected my original one, it worked again. Then right after stopped working....again, then again started working. So its not completely dead yet! I got mine on ebay FWIW. Only difference is, cable needs to be on the arrow side, but the tube is easy to rotate 180 degrees.
