Re: Alternator and brushes
I have a complete alternator with excellent brushes. the silinoid is bad. but the rest of the starter works gr8 it even works, but sometimes it takes 3 turns to start it. I did sray gray paint on it to save it from rust in case i needed it for spare parts. make a offer and it's yours plus shipping it is off a 89 TPI auto 700r4 trans, but all the inner parts are interchangable.

Classic Industries alternator question
Hi,
I bought an alternator from Classic Industries.
I did not try to install it until now but I noticed the following:
The gap on the pulley is thinner than the gap on the original
alternator. The original is about 11mm wide, this one is 9mm.
I think it will damage the drive belt because the edges of the pulley
are cutting and not round. The belts are 11mm wide.
What should I do? Can I just remove the pulley from the original
alternator and put it onto the new one? Are they compatible?
Please find attached the picture of the new alternator.
Description on the website is:
ALTERNATOR 1983-1984
OEM 100 amp exc Cross Fire Injection
The original one has black plastic fan or what.
Thank you,
Laszlo

Re: Alternator and brushes
you should change the pulleys. Put the original one back on, clean it up and paint it so U don't have messy stuff.. U will need air tools 2 make it easy or some auto part shops will do it for free. Do not clamp the pully to try to loosed the nut, this will cause it to bend and wear out your bearring. if you can, try 2 use some liquid wrench and hold a part of the middle if you can by wedging a screw driver in it and use a hammer to hit the end of your ratchet to looswen the bolts.

Re: Alternator and brushes
just go to carquest if you have one local they will do it if not then geta set of the cheap rubber strap wrences from walmart ($7 or so) and then use a socket to remove the retaining nut don't remember size 1 and 1/8 or 1 and 1/4 then install the old pulley like it was mentioned just clean and paint to make it look aftermarket just sandblast then paint with gold cadium or zinc paint available from some auto parts stores or Classic industries.
