What to do about my 305????
What to do about my 305????
Ok here is what i am having a hard time deciding on...
My 305 just turned 100,000 miles the other day. It has as oil leak, Rear Seal, and is starting to burn a little oil now. My question is, should i put the money into rebuilding it or look for a 350? i dont have a ton of cash to spend so i am thinking a rebuild of my 305 will be better. Anyone have any tips/advice they want to give??? THANKS A LOT!!!
P.S. I think my mom wants me to get a new car but i just cant get rid of my baby!!! Other than that there isnt anything wrong with her, she looks BEAUTIFUL!!!!

If the engine has been half-way decently maintained, most likely the bottom end is okay. You're probably getting oil past your valve stem seals, which isn't a big deal to fix. Neither is the rear main seal.
But, before you consider giving the block to a machine shop, look into getting a 350 core to rebuild. It will most likely cost less to build (although recently I've seen 305 rebuild kits that were the same price as 350 kits - that wasn't the case before), but the net results will be worth it even if it is a couple hundred more to do. That may sound like a lot, but it isn't, really, for the difference in performance you'll get.
Remember, this is coming from a guy who jazzed up his 305. I may finally have a line on a 350 builder...

I replaced the 305 TBI motor in my 92 RS with a 350 last year.
If you can afford it, I'd go with the extra cubes every time.
I bought a 300HP 350 long block from www.goautocenter.com.
It was $1855 plus shipping and came with a Crane Compucam(hydraulic roller), and all new GM parts,PM Rods, crank,Iron TPI heads, oil pan, timing cover, etc.Warranteed for 24,000 miles, more for extra $.Totally transformed the car!
Almost twice the HP and Torque than the 305, and I'm still running TBI (much less expensive than TPI).Passes smog in California as a 305, too!

I replaced my 305 with a 350 and now I'm kicking myself.
I spent $3000 (Canadian) building a 350 with 9.2:1, 1.94/1.50 valves, and Comp hydraulic roller cam. But now I'm broke and can't afford to do the exhaust, and the stock 305 TBI exhaust really chokes a 350! For half the price I could've just installed the cam I have in my 350 in the 305, and added headers and 3" catback exhaust, and I'd be making more ponies.

Well... I'm at a crossroads....
I've invested about $500 into my 305 so far, and I'm merely getting ready to put the shortblock together.
I still have some little things to obtain yet, so I'm not done yet.
I'll probably end up spending about $1000.
And have a car that is non-smog....
I like the idea of Rich getting the engine that still passes smog under 305 standards.

If you go with a different motor, I may be interested in your old 305.
Email if you decide to get rid of it.
Thanks
