If you don't want a big hassle, the LT1 is ruled out. There's a sticky post at the top of this forum list with a few sites of people who have swapped LS1 and LT1 engines, take a look and see what you're in for.

A 350 with TPI is a moderate hassle but yields good results, or if you want to stay carb that's an option.

how many miles does it have? Does it smoke? Vortec heads and/or a roots supercharger would give it some kick

Actually the LT1 is a moderate hassle. The LS1 is a big hassle . The 350 should just drop right in without a problem. I'd get a nice sbc 350 to start with and then go from there .

The quickest, easiest, most hassle-free swap you could do to make more power would be a carbed 350, IMO.

Exactly, that way tach computer electrical all of that headache won't matter. Just get a pre '87 350 carburated crate engine. Drops right in with zero hassle.

For people thinking 350... I like more cubes. Dropping in Pontiac 400 in my third gen. (87 Camaro). 455 is the same block size but you can spin the 400 higher and still have tons of torque. Headers are a problem, Indian Adventures are making a set for this swap.(www.chiefmanyhorses.com). Something else to think about.

I got an 84 TA, but with the LG4 (low output). I'm going to a L98 350 from a 92 TA... with TES headers and cat back. Summit was a big help with parts, and the engine was ~$1,500 (rebuilt w/3yr unlimited milage worranty) after tax. Basically I'm going from 150HP and 240lb/ft torque to 240HP and 340lb/ft torque. If that sounds like enough of a HP boost to you.
