whats up guys?
i know this is about a 1st gen and not a 3rd, but all the 1st gen sites that i have been on have grumpy old men runnin them.
anyway, a friend of mine is probably going to purchase a 68 wtih a strait 6 in them. right now, it has a 3 spd tranny and some other stuff.
basicly, he wants to know what motors he can put in there and what can be used and saved.
hes gonna want some more power, so im thinking like that 330hp-350 crate motor for like $2200. trust me, the kid dont need much power, he CAN NOT drive a normal car now---let alone a muscle car.
but hey, with responsibility comes maturity!

Well you could put anything from a 4cyl iron duke to a 455 big block..It all depends on $$$$$$. If he is only looking for about 300hp or a bit more. then just go with a 350 sbc. For about $2000 into the engine he'll get the HP he is looking for with easy!
A L98 TPI would look really sharp in that car. In fact the L98 look awesome in just about any car. Here is my 85 MOnte SS with the L98. 300HP no problem with $2000 to spend on it.

Well in 68' basically anything and everything went under the hood. From a straight 6 to a small block to a big block. The first thing that needs to go is the tranny..it was not designed to "live" behind a small block or big block with any amount of torque. If auto is his thing many choices to choose from. TH-350 or TH-400 or the overdrive units..700R4 or the 200 many ways you can go there. Manual transmission many choices as well..An old muncie rockcrusher "4" speed would work..might be hard to find thou.
You have your "5" speeds..T-5 Borg-Warner any many aftermarket companies..Richmond to name one. Then you have the 6 speed Tremec i believe..could be wrong on that one. Bottom line is you have a great car to work with very flexible as far as swaps go. Do your homework..have a plan then have at it.
Goodluck...

You can swap a LT1 into a older camaro. Check the following site, this guy has done it. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/S...5/camaro1.html
Been said before, just about anything will fit in that engine bay.

i know you aren't going to care but the bodys are differant for BBCs in 1st gens. the heater core is located to the outter edge of the firewall while all others the heater core is more left of center on the firewall. if you were trying to make this into a BBC car and pass it off as such it'd be easy to spot by anyone that knows just a little bit. either way a BBC will fit. 1st gens don't handle very well and a lot of the front end parts are sort of wimpy for handeling. my iroc out handled my 68 by a mile.

Sounds like the straight six should stay right where it is...Originally posted by N8Miller

Check out www.pro-touring.com. I think you will find they are a little more in tune with what you are up to. Thirdgen.org has an incredible wealth of LT1 swapping info that is applicable to other cars too. Good luck

As far as the handling there are alot of excellent resources out there for the first gen guys. The Twister and Mule come to mind in regards to handling. Also check out www.detroitspeed.com for some cool upgrades. Global West and Hotchkis also make excellent products for the first gen guys.
