Thanks for the imput
I was told by some builders to start out with the zz4 shortblock because you cannot beat the price for the assembly. What do you guys think.Im looking for about 400or so hp and be streetable.I was quoted a price of around $8000 from a vendor most know here(I wont mention any names.)I think its a bit steep and with shopping around I could get it built for less.Im interested in running the fast burn heads also. Here is something that baffled me.The vendor said the zz4 motor would ,right after I purchased it would have to be dissasembled and zero decked to raise the compression to make the numbers I want(around 400hp Flywheel)I think this is a lot of bunk.Any opinions?Recommendations?Cam selection? As of now Im looking to run the long tube runner setup for the street,as I know I can get a great deal on the intake parts if I shop around.I cant really afford a superram,or miniram right now and I feel the long tube runner setup is great for the street.Comments please Thank you

8k for what? The shortblock or the whole fastburn motor? Thats a lot of change for a crate motor thats not complete! I say get the shortblock and build it up. I wish i could've done that but hey, thats in the past. good luck
I think Auto Center Inc. in Dallas has exactly what you're looking for. It's a 350 crate, based on the ZZ short block with performance heads and matching cam and intake. Check it out, Auto Center. It makes 420HP at the flywheel with a 750cfm dual barrel, you could probably make at least that with, say a steath ram or superram. A new engine with all forged internals and 420HP for $4380, you can't beat that with a stick!
$8,000 does seem high. You can get a Fast Burn 385 for around $3600 IIRC. If that isn't enough power, add the HOT cam and 1.6 rockers to push it up to 425. I don't recall the cost on the HOT cam and rockers, but my guess is you are looking at about $4,000 for the engine and additional parts.

This doesn't make much sense to me... maybe someone already has the answer.
Why does SDPC sell the 383 short block for $3,389.00 and the whole motor for $3,895.00? Seems to me the short block should cost a lot less than the $506 difference SDPC has it at. That measly $506 gets you:
- Vortec heads
- Aluminum dual plane intake
- Valve covers
- Timing cover
- Cast iron water pump
- Harmonic balancer
- Dipstick assembly
Seems one could sell the unwanted parts and reduce the cost but that all seems kind of backward.

Parrydise7, whats "IIRC", not famillar with that. Also, where is it under $4k? Last i checked the FB385 was $4195 through Scoggin-Dickey. Not flaming, just curious. Later
No offense taken. IIRC = If I recall correctly (which I didn't). I may have gotten my engines a bit mixed up. I just checked gmpartsdirect.com. I don't know how their prices compare to Scoggin-Dickey, but they have good prices (although they are high on shipping, as I noted above). At gmpartsdirect.com the Fast Burn 385 is $4,025.00 (plus shipping). The ZZ4 goes for $3496.50. I could have sworn the Fast Burn 385 was under $4,000 not that long ago.
I'm going to do some checking around. If I turn up a better price I'll edit this post.
Okay, I took a look at the GM Performance Parts Catalog. It gives the price for the various parts, but you have to pick a dealer. Most of the dealers have the Fast Burn 385 priced in the low $4000s. However, Sallee Chevrolet (in Oregon, I think) has it at $8050 (!). That has got to be a typo, but it caught my attention because of the guy that said he was quoted $8000 by some anonymous vendor. Sorry to let all of you anxious Fast Burn 385 purchasers down. From now on I'm going to start using a different acronym: IIRC,WIUD (If I recall correctly, which I usually don't.)

Oh ok! All i was looking for was the "IIRC" thing. The price has actually gone up since i purchased mine last year. I got mine for $4095 shipped from Scoggin-Dickey, now they want $4195 IIRC for just the motor. LOL, had to do it. Later
JuicedBird, that isn't a complete engine for the price your quoting.
IROCZ1989, i too have been looking into the same idea as yourself using the zz5 as a base with a miniram intake, 16.rr's, a tpis cam and some proper tunning. although i've been told with all of that i'm looking at roughly 460 at the crank and about 385 at the wheels.
this is also getting at cost prices on most things other than the intake but still at 7,600? alot of money for the little power.
i don't see how your going to get those numbers without an extreme upper intake.
the only thing that bothers me about the zz5 is the use of hypereutectic pistons instead of forged. although they claim it can hold up to 600 i always like to be higher than the intended goal.
have you looked into 4 bolt 350 or larger displacement shortblocks and then adding the fastburn heads with the nicer cam and proper intake down the road.
i was told going this route you can hit roughly 500 easy at the crank using something like a gm 383 shortblock, fastburn heads, tpis zz9 type cam and a good intake like the miniram and such and be at the same price or cheaper if you choose your parts right.
the fastburn looks really nice, but when you look at what you'll need to bring that carbed power back up once you remove it your price jumps absorbently. although i suppose if you didn't go with something like a mini ram you could easily save 3,000 right.
you should email me with some of your ideas and things you've seen. since were going for the same thing i'd like to go over some stuff with you and see what your thoughts are on what you've found out!

You guys are trying too hard. Find a roller block with crank, rods and pistons at a boneyard in decent shape, then put some forged pistons in it after having a local machine/speed shop do their thing. Spend the money you saved on heads and intake.
Yo Kandied....
That 383 short block with Fast Burn heads should make for a heck of a motor. GM's Performance Parts Catalog claims 497 horsepower out of a 383 with Fast Burn heads, a single plane intake mani (and a variety of other nice parts) IIRC,WIUD.

what is that at the end.......IIRC, etc?
the other thing i was thinking was since the fastburn heads are suppose to be so nice. anyone know if they would flow well with a flattop forged piston like something je or eagle sells?
i figure i could custom build a 4 bolt setup for possibly a little less or the same at least using a forged piston. wouldn't that be better?
what about a nice 383 shorblock like the gm 4 bolt setup using the fastburn heads and a healthy cam with the miniram?
anyone attempted this?
what type of pistons come with the 383 gm shortblock again?
