Help me pick a new motor

Well guys, I was going to go with this 350, but it has the 193 heads on it, and from what I've been told, they suck. When I called the guys, they said with a TBI on it, and their TBI cam, I would probably only be around 260 HP. I think AJ92RS has this motor.

I want to go with a 350 because I'm looking for atleast 300 HP. This is unless of course yall can find me a 305 that makes 300 HP.
I've also been looking at this motor:

http://www.goautocenter.com/330hp_vortec.htm

A couple of things though, it has to be emissions legal, and it must do well as my daily driver. Other than that, $4000 is about as high as I want to go. That includes the $700 for labor.

Yall might remember that I was going to just build my 305 up, but since the 300 HP level seems like more of a pain in the *** than it's worth, plus the fact that I'm starting to blow out black smoke, I'm looking for a new motor.

300 HP / emissions legal / daily driver

What yall got?

Or what about this?

http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=514&pid=620

The L98 is a good block right? This might be a good idea seeing how I already have:

Edelbrock TBI intake
GMPP Timing Chain
Stewart Stage 1 Water Pump

. . . all of these parts are sitting in my house. I also have an LT1 cam, but that might be too tame for my 300 HP goal.

So all's I might need is a good set of heads, a cam w/ lifters, pushrods, flywheel, and an oil pump and pan.

Of course a long block would be less of a headache.

My brain is startin' to churn yall.

Help me out. I've got some money to burn.:lala:

Well, Gunny, here's my setup, I built it up for HSR stealth ram which I'll be getting this summer sometime but I've got almost 400hp from it I don't think that the suspension mods are nessessary, but since I drive this car every day, I did it to ensure that the car "Stays Together" and doesn't twist and buckle fenders.

I think AJ92RS has this motor.
I "had" that motor. It was out of a 1990 3/4 HD pickup. All I'm using is the block, crank, and rods.

I still have those heads though.

I'm pocket porting them and I was going to put them on a 350 that I'm building for my '83 C10 pickup. I wanted low RPM grunt in that truck, and those heads seem to be made for trucks so, what the heck, right?

That's all changed now. I was going to use Vortec heads on that block. I was building it for my '92. My '92 got hit in a freak accident and I don't know if I'm going to be building it now.

Last night I picked up a '72 Camaro. It has a 350 w/Vortec heads, and Comp Cams XE274. Soooo the motor I'm building will probably go in the '72, and the 350 from the '72 will go in my truck.

Anyway, that short block looks good. Then maybe get yourself one of three heads, in this order...

1.) World S/R Torquers
2.) L98 heads
3.) Good ol' Vortec heads

If you need to pass emissions, and/or don't have the ability to program your own chips, forget the Vortec heads. They don't have the port for the EGR. You'd either have to run one from the exhaust manifolds/headers, or bypass the EGR in the ECM. Either one of those can be a major PITA.

Both of the first two heads have EGR ports. The World heads, IMHO are the easiest to swap, and have A LOT of features for the money. Screw in studs, guide plates, thick decks, chrome moly retainers, springs for up to .560" lift, and 2.02"/1.60" stainless valves w/ undercut stems and swirl polished. All that for under $800.00

One more option are the TFS aluminum heads. I'm not sure about them though. FWIW, I've more bad than good about them.

Well if I go with that short block with the S/R heads, the 87-up heads are 76cc. That's going to leave my compression somewhere around 8.3:1?? Isn't that kind of low? I'm just now kind of getting familiar with cylinder head lingo, and how it all relates to performance, so yall are going to have to guide me a little bit. Can't I use a thinner gaskets to raise compression? And doesn't a higher compression equal more horsepower and better milage?

Yeah, that's the one I called the guy about, he said somewhere closer to the 260 HP range. He said those numbers were with some sort of TPI unit on top. Does Rich have a dyno sheet or something that would prove this guy wrong? If so, I might be in business.

I got a L98 long block from AC Delco and a LT4 cam from SDPC for $2300 total. ($190 for the cam with shipping and a little over 2k for the motor)

But, I dont have to deal with emmisions, so I dont know what to tell ya.

I should be pushing over 300 horses on a 305, but i would still rather have a 350 or better yet a 383.
