Fuel pressure regulator?!?

Ok so im dropping the fresh new 355 this weeken, runing the same tpi pump with a holley 3 port pressure regulator, i have 2 ports hooked up now to it, one is blocked off, one for fuel from pump and one for puel to the carb with lower pressure, the blocked one i guess i should hook up to the return line, or leave it blocked...what do i do...this is what it looks like.....the fuel paths at last

out - - out

I can't say for sure how the holley works but my Mallory works like this:

4 ports

1 for fuel in (hi pressure)
1 for low pressure out (to carb)
1 for remaining pressure out (back to tank)
1 blocked

Let me also note that with my AFPR I could not get the PSI below 10 and had to add another low pressure (3-12PSI) regulator inbetween the carb and the first regulator to get to the right PSI.

Hope this helps ya

You should probably find out before you run the engine. You absolutely need a return line back to the tank or you'll prematurely burn up your fuel pump. A regulator fuel return port will have a valve to control fuel flow. If you can see straight through then it's just another fuel feed - it is not a fuel return port. If this is the case then you need a different regulator.

The "typical" Holley reg has an inlet port and two outlet ports (one for each bowl, or one to carb and one to pressure gage), no return port.

You need one that regulates pressure by controlling the amount of fuel returned to the tank.

Personally, I wouldn't run it at all like that or you can risk burning up the fuel pump. You'll be operating the car for at least 30 minutes just for initial break in. I'd rather change a regulator than change a fuel pump!

Here it is.

...Taken from a tech document at www.thirgen.org

AFPR option: There are two AFPRs at the time of this writing that I know of. One is made by Mallory (p.n.: MAA-4309) the other by Barry Grant (p.n.: 132-171021). Again, which is better is mostly personal preference. Note that there are three lines from the fuel tank on the drivers side under the master cylinder. One is fuel delivery, one fuel return, and the other goes to the charcoal canister behind the headlights. The fuel delivery line is slightly thicker than the return. Go to your local hardware store and buy some 3/8" pipe thread to 3/8" hose nipple fittings, and put one in each port of the AFPR with a good coat of thread sealant. Plumb a hose from the fuel delivery line to the suitable port on the AFPR, and do the same with the return. Finally, run a line from the pressure port on the AFPR to the carb. Remove the hose that's on the line going to the charcoal canister (remove the whole canister if you want), clamp a length of 3/8" hose onto the end of the hard bent line, and rout it out of the engine compartment somewhere. Mine exits in front of the left tire. This is necessary to vent pressure buildup inside the tank.
