free 305 into my v6
ok...i read the v-6 to v-8 swap...so i'm gonna propose this...my friend has a 305 complete engine from his nova ss that he took out...it runs fine and is just sittin there needing a home...since i'm swapping it as is into my 85 v-6 and not going with any emissions controls i figure i need the engine...a new tranny...some motor mounts...a way to lock up the tcc...a way to lower fuel pressure...some motor mounts and front suspension work...this is what i gathered from reading the thread on the swap...is this any good of an idea...i mean...i have a v-8 powered lincoln so i guess i should maybe upgrade a little on the v-6...suggestions are great...and so are advice...i mean i probably won't spend alot on this swap compared to if i wanted to go with a 350 tpi from another 3rd gen like i wanted/tried before...on the tranny question...if i got one from a 3rd gen v-8 what components other than the trans itself would i need...thanx for helping...

Sounds like you have a fairly decent understanding of what you need.
If you get the tranny from a 3rd gen, you just need the tranny.

ahhh...excellent...yea...i do my best at this car stuff...i'm waiting on my buddy to give me the ok on the engine....ummm...let me throw a couple other things out...maybe i can get some more help...for the speedometer gear since i have a cable driven speedo still would need to be one that is for my 3.42 rear end...correct...what exactly would i need to do for the fuel setup...and for my ignition...it comes with hei coil in cap...can i switch that to a remote coil because i have an accel in my car already with a holley ignition module...and that might help me be able to use my existing tach to some extent...and if this all sounds good...should i go through with the trouble of doing it just for the hell of it cause if not i can always put the 6 right back in place...

If you get a TH700 from a 3rd gen V8, you should be able to use the speedometer drive gears from your current transmission in it.
You can convert HEI to external coil. Pretty common, in fact.
The wire that goes to your coil now for the tach can be used on the HEI.
The fuel pressure regulation is discussed often on the carb forum. Basically, you need a return-type regulator that can be adjusted down to about 6 psi.
This project should only be started if you intend to finish it. Getting half-way and putting the V6 back in is an indication of a taste for unnecessary pain.

Dont forget you will need a radiator. And radiator hoses. Oil, oil filer, new air breather, PCV valve, probably would want to replace oil pan and valve cover gaskets while its out, just cause its easy to do. You will also need complete new exhast. From the heads back. Allow yourself at least 700 bucks to accomplish this. From there you need to decide about cooling. What type of fan will you use, does your car have electric fans now? You already know that you will need a trans, but if you get a new one, make sure to allot for a fluid and filter change, and replace the front and rear seals. Again, a little bit of insurance. I went through this swap earlier this year. It isnt too bad, but it isnt really cheap.

well...i'm pullin the motor apart to fix the issue of how my friend didn't line up the timing marks when he put it back together and hence never used it again...but i know it runs...i've pulled motors apart before and planned to regasket and change the seals...no biggie...nothing performance or mods until i know it is fully running...new breather is already taken care of with a nice rebuilt holley carb on top...exhaust...hmm...i a dynomax cat back currently that is for 2.8/3.1/305 if i remember correctly...i know i'll need a different y pipe from the junkyard...and probably some exhaust manifolds/headers...it has headers already...but not made for the bird...so i'll see about what i can do for that...radiator will be boneyard for almost nothign...i have an electric fan and i can hook up a relay for it...the v-6 fan will work fine as my uncle uses one in his 5.0 mustang and has no cooling issues...the thing is to do it as cheaply/cost effectively cause if i do it all and it doesn't work...i don't want to be out too much money...but with more and more info i'll make the decision if i should do it or spend soime more money to hop up my lincoln...thanx again...
Dont waste your money on a y from the junkyard, just order a new one. more than likely, the exhaust you have is going to be restrictive. You really need a 3" catback, even for a 305. Yeah, you will need headers specific for the chassis, order the ypipe with them, best way to do it. As far as being cheap, it wont be. I did the same thing you are, and thought everything out, and planned it all. Then I still went 700 bucks over budget.
