VG30DETT engine swap

Hey, I just bought a 1987 Camaro sport coupe 305 v8, and I want to do a big project on it. My friend and I were throwing around the idea of doing a VG30DETT engine swap(its a twin turbo v6 from 300zx's). Now I understand this would take much work and money, but Im curious if you guys think it would actually work... Oh, and please dont flame me for not using a genuine american engine or something like that. I personaly think it would be extremely awesome to see/have a twin turbo'd Camaro. Please post your thoughts, thanks

A few thoughts:

1) I believe it's been speculated before.

2) All talk, no action.

3) Don't expect much - it's an oddball swap, and you're pretty much on your own.

4) You say, "I personaly think it would be extremely awesome to see/have a twin turbo'd Camaro." Perhaps, but you don't have to go weird to get awesome. A twin turbo LSx makes a lot more sense.

5) I'll be watching this thread, and will delete posts and/or lock the thread as soon as TGO rules are violated. I will not explain either action - you should be able to figure it out before you start typing.

Haha, Im not getting flamed too bad I guess. You say Im all talk no action, pshhh. The reason I was throwing this idea around is I want a car that NOBODY has... sure I could throw a 350 in my camaro and the same engine as about 1,000,000 other camaro owners, or I could do a one of a kind twin turbo setup that I guarntee would put my car in magazines and shows(saying it turned out right). All Im asking is if you guys think it would be possible, not if you think its cool or stupid, normal or weird, american or import. Also, has anyone ever heard of a JDM(japanese domestic market) engine being swapped into a camaro? or any american car for that matter? Thanks for your comments everyone.

I didn't say you are all talk and no action. You asked for thoughts, and my thought is that threads such as this are all talk and no action. I.E., devoid of technical merit.

Is it possible? All you have to do is look through the magazine rack any given month and you'll find some outrageous swap/modification somebody did and got print. Like the 8 turbo '57 Chevy featured recently. Totally devoid of technical merit, but hey, it made the rag and mine hasn't.

If you have the time and money to waste on this trying to get your 15 minutes, go ahead. Just don't expect willing participation from the general population. Personally, I'm so disgusted with the current state of the hobby's magazines that I'm to the point of allowing subscriptions to expire with no feeling of loss. After reading the Editor's column in the latest edition of Pop Hot Rod last night, which basically told me I need to conform to his very narrow defination of "worthiness" in order to expect any attention from him, and that I'd better spend a butt-load of my hard-earned money on his advertisers' products (okay, he didn't say the exactly, but the message is there), and what I'll see in his rag is stuff that has absolutely no attraction to me, practically or otherwise, I really don't care. However, if you do this project in a very well thought-out and well-excuted fashion, you'll probably be able to produce a trailer queen that's worthy of his rag.

Go for it. Enjoy your 15 minutes.

Meh, say what you will but I want a car thats original, its more than just "15 minutes of fame" but a statement. Anywho, it doesnt matter anyways, I've decided after some thought that this project would be waaaay harder than it would be worth(well, maybe..). I do know that Im not gonna do the everyday 350 swap either.. Anywho, you shouldn't flame someone who ask for peoples thoughts on a certain subject, I mean, what the hell are the use of message boards other than to spread information? I am glad that you at least didnt start tearing my guts out for being un-american by using a JDM engine. In the future, try giving people helpful advice rather then ranting about personal opinions and magazines.

It's pointless. Why not just twin turbo the engine you already have? For all the money you would put into a swap like that, you could get a 350, twin turbo IT, and make far more power.

Oh yeah, and it isnt a 'jdm' engine if you get it from a car here.

It actually is JDM....JDM=Japanese Domestic Market

I thought jdm referred to parts from Japan.. JDM clear corner lights, etc...

It does. JAPANESE Domestic Market. That means domestic in Japan, not domestic in America.

YEah, I agree, this post was pointless, no one helped at all for you guys arguing about the JDM, your both right, if you buy an asian car out here in america its not JDM, however if you do what I was planning and say, order a front clip from japan it would then be a JDM engine. I dont know why everyone gets so angry over someone throwing around the IDEA of a original engine swap. As for why I dont just turbo a 350, well the kits(just the turbos) go for around $3,000, whereas I could buy a lightly used VG30DETT front clip with transmission and everything else I need for only $2,000 or so. Im still throwing around the idea of this in my head, but I dont count on any help from this message board.

hmmm, how do you expect to get help when you come in and your first post is some off the wall oddball combo that would take TONS of fab work. your right, noone has done it. most of us don't know much about those motors, or if it will even go in the car. how do you expect us to know what it is your talking about when most of us probably haven't even seen one of these said motors? you didn't give ANY specifics on the motors or what driventrain you plan to use or anything. this message board has WAY more technical data on it than any other boards. this is thirdgen specific and doesn't allow stupid boards like "almost anything goes" or "lounge" or something else where a bunch of stupid teenagers come in and say dumb stuff. no no, this is by-far the BEST message board for gathering technical data on thirdgens than ANY other board.

Again, to what purpose?

The purpose of this Board is to share technical information with fellow 3rd gen hobbyists. Unless there is a reasonable intention to actually do a particular project, don't waste the bandwidth. If there is an actual intent to go through with a one-off project, about all the assistance you can expect from here is identification of GM features, most of which can be obtained by getting a factory shop manual.
