My advice is to save your coins and have a quality rebuild done on a 350,that's gonna be your best bet, dollar for dollar.
If you don't have a core,it's also real tough to beat the Goodwrench replacement 350,brand new for around $1400

so u think i shoudl just slap a 350 in there. GRab a used 350 with less then 150k miles and get it rebuilt?
or buy a new one....
yes a mec. told me this i went to the shop today and he said it sounds like the rod is knocking. and its bad. he said it would cost like 3,000 to rubild that 1 and so did another shop. im liek thats a new motor.
so i guess my best bet is keep my eye open for a 350 off ebay or somwthing. and i guess i can look for a tranny as well since im doing that becuse i cant even go into 4th gear.
im starting to wounder is this car even worth what i put into it.......hmmmmmmm

not bad. I still say you'd be better of taking the time to find 350. then pul the old motor and drop in the 350. run it til it dies, and build a 383.

tiger, that ebay link is only for pre-85 engine with 2pc rear main seal. U better off getting a roller 350 from the junkyard for 80 bucks and buy a complete rebuild kit.

don't mean to blow smoke up your butt. but, i will have a 350 for sale in the next month or so, with only 30k on the rebuild. runs fine, just putting in a 406. not looking to get too much for it. if your interested i'll give you some more details. do you now have a 305?

How many threads are you going to start over this?
3k for a rebuild is not unreasonable even when doing it yourself. My budget build is almost totaling $2500 and I have nothing special in it except new vortec heads. Subtract $500 and you have the rest in labor and a few extra things at the machine shop that I didn't get. Not to mention, if he wants to keep the tbi, he will need to do some tuning to the chip, or go carb (tack on another $300 at the minimum) and a new intake($150), he will need a HEI distributor.
I still agree with Lo-tec. I don't think now is the time for you to tackle this. Kick this one to the curb and use that money to buy a decent Z so you have the time to learn whats going on. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to discourage you Tiger. You have to start somewhere. But you don't give a 3 year old a 1000 piece puzzle to start with.

Cut your losses. Put some 85-90W in it to quiet it down, and sell it. I don't believe from your posts that you're at the stage to tear down and rebuild an engine yet, so I would kick this one to the curb and use the money you were about to lay down for a rebuilt engine and get a late 80's 350 TPI car. More bang, less buck, and no work!!

sorry, email has been down for a while over here. i will be in southern california in two weeks. 500 bucks and you could have the 350/w computer and all. it only has...roughly 20k on the motor. runs good and doesn't burn oil. email me @ big24dave2003@yahoo.com , if your still looking. its been a little crazy over here lately....

my 2 cents..... buy somthing that gets good miliage.. keep the car if its in good shape... and get some books.. learn whats involved in a rebuild, and see if its somthign you might be interested in... more info before you act is the only way...thats why were all here in the first place

I've done a sbc rebuild before and it's something I would not want to do again. If it was me, I'd save up and get a Goodwrench motor. Your local Chevy dealer should have them and they usually sell them outright, no core. The best thing about them is at least you get a warranty that would be better than any guarantee an engine shop could offer.
Just my 2 cents.
