the rears are the same, the tranny will not bolt up, and i wouldn't bother with a 305, if you wanna go v8 get the 350 and be done with it

Check out the engine swap forum too, https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/for...?s=&forumid=20 most of the successful swap guys hang out there.

But whats cool is if you put the 305 in now and go to a 350 later, the swap won't be nearly as painful since you'd just be changing the engine block instead of the whole car.

ok seriously why is everyone so against a 305? its not a bad engine. just happens to be what i drive. if he wants a 305 more power to him,....350 isnt the greatest in the world

305's are cheap and availible, and take tons of abuse and keep on ticking. I have one with nearly 188k on it and it still runs strong.

mine has gone 13.20@101.59mph and has more in it and is a really mild build up. they make power. if it's CHEAP, buy it. if you come across a 350, buy it first. the 305 is a great motor, but you'll hit a performance wall with it's potential when compared to a 350. valve shrouding is the problem here so you can't go too big with the valves. consiquently, you can't get air into and out of the combustion chamber near as fast as the larger 4" bore of the 350.

sorry, but 350's are far superior to the 305 when it comes to potential. people don't go as fast with their 350's as they could because they put them together with mis-matched parts. sometimes spending lots of money to do so too.

the t-5 will live ok behind it, but i'd upgrade if you can. the belhousing and clutch are way different though and will need to be replaced with v8 stuff.

If you do go 305 I would put a set of 350 heads on it. They match right up and you will have less problems with it that way.

and effectively lower your compression ratio and loose power. not the way to go. 416 heads (which are what i'm running) are GREAT for building power. they came stock on all lg4's and l69's. the 081 head is the tpi head for the 305 if you need the centerbolt valve cover provisions. the are the exact same head, but the 416 is for pre 87 and the 081 is for post 87.

do NOT put 350 heads on your 305. while it will work, you'll be slower.

i agree the 305 is a great engine. i had a 305 TBI that saw 298,678 Miles and it still filled the whole neighborhood with White smoke. The only reason i got rid of the car was because it got hit in the back. and i had no money to fix it RIP 1990 RS, *** i loved that car. you guys know the feeling right? owning your first Thirdgen? you never forget it
