305 or 350

i have determined that rebuilding my 305 will be cheaper but i wana know if its worth the money. i mean will it make good power and by good power im talkin 350 hp w/o nitrous or anything. ive been looking for a 350 but i cant find a good one so this is my new option. let me know your honest opinion.

if i was in your position and have the money, (i sorta am but im changing from a V6) i would recomend finding an old non fuel injected 350 -that isnt too far gone- at a junkyard and make it in working order. But, if your not the guy who sometimes runs it in races and just uses it for a comuter i would go with just redoing your 305. Both engines are great but i personnaly like the non-EFI engines (if you wanna make it a racer there better ) either way good luck

In the end it is often cheaper to rebuild a 350 than a 305. Parts are cheaper and you are only out the cost of a core. You also have more power potential with a 350. If you are going with a 350 TBI than you have many options. You can get a 350 roller short block for under $2k. You could find a low mileage LO5 for just a few hundred if that. You will need money for supporting mods. You will need at least a full exhaust, chip work, injectors, and knock sensor. This all costs money that you probably didn't budget into your build.

In the end if you rebuild your 305 you pay more to get less.

350 hands down. Just a basic MR.Goodwrench 350 will put out 260 hp without any mods. I have a 305 because thats what came in the car and it runs fine. But no way would I ever consider a 305 over a 350. That one is a no brainer...

Well here is where I would normally comeout swinging in defense of the 'lil 305, however in your case you have TBI which changes things a bit. I rebuilt my 305 but it was not hurt very badly, I did not need new pistons, no overbore, etc. If all you have to do is hone the cylinders, new bearings, rings, and gaskets, it is cheaper to rebuild your 305. If you have to buy pistons, and bore the block that is where the line gets kinda fuzzy. When i rebuild my LB9 my dad had a 350 laying around but it needed pistons, had junk late 70s heads, it would have cost way more to build the 350 and with the stock heads I am confident it would have been slower or as slow as a stock LB9.

If you goal is 350hp, you could get real close to that fairly easy with an LB9, I am at about 300 right now with no real special work. However you have the L03, which changes things a bit. To make an L03 run you need heads, throttle body, intake, cam, chip, and i think injectors. You will need all those same things to make a 350 TBI motor run as well so your cash outlay will be about the same. The only difference would be again if you have to bore the 305 to clean it up you will be in the just as much money as it would cost to build a 350.

In short, if you do not have to bore the 305 to rebuild it, or if you just want to be different, building the 305 may be a viable option. If you are going to have to bore and buy pistons anyway, even I will admit the 350 will be the better choice.

i was pondering on my response and anybody who knows the prices better can correct me if im wrong but GM performance is selling a 350 H.O. crate engine that would probably be right up your alley. it has 330 hp strait from the crate. to me this sounds like a good deal. either way good luck

I played with my LG4--cam, intake, timing, carb tweeks, full L69 exhaust, and so on. The learning curve was great, and as a consequence, the time spent well worth my effort. However, that said, the 350 HO Deluxe I swapped in over the summer is a veritable rocket ship in comparison--and twice the fun.

Wow - I've only got $3400 in my 1992 so far - car included. That's a decent built 350, carb, headers, 4th gen rear with LS1 disc brakes and 3.42 gears, poly bushings all around, rebuilt 700R4 tranny, shift kit and vette servos, 4th gen seats, glass T-Tops to replace the Lexan, wonderbar & big sway bars, new radiator, a set of 4th gen wheels/tires if I decide to swap later, and boxes of interior parts to restore everything. Of course there again, I don't know my HP, I did all my own work, it's taken me 9 months to get it on the street, and I'm a tightass! But, I've loved every minute of it! And I'll spend the entire summer working on the rest.
