305 TPI repair or 350 TPI swap??help!!

I have a 1985 Iroc camaro with a 305 TPI.
I've had this car for 13 years.
It has sat in my garage for 5 years.
Runs great but does smoke when started.
My question is. Do I put time and money into this motor, or swap it out for a 350 TPI. The only thing I did to the car is put in a new chip.
I would like the motor to end up with about 350 horse power.

Rebuild the 305 or swap for a 350???

Can you get a 350 short block and put on my TPI.

I would really like to start driving this car again.
I may just fix the smoking problem and get it on the road.

I was in the same boat you were, my TPI 305 ran great and started up on the first crank, with 107k miles....but I had some leaks and that was killing me. I decieded to go the crate 350 route, put in a little more aggressive comp cam & headers but wanted to keep the TPI. I am still in the process (finally just set the engine and trans) but looking back go the 350 route and plan to spend 60-75% more than you planned.

Do you know if the 1985 Camaro IROC 305 EFI TPI injection set-up will into a 350 long-block? If so, which one and what computer changes are needed?

Rebuild 305 TPI from 1985 IROC - OR use crate 350? Which 350 will accept the EFI-TPI manifold?

You can most likely fix the oil burning in an afternoon for less than $50. Valve guide seals, valve cover gaskets. Plus whatever you mess up in the process (crumbling vacuum lines, split rubber hoses, deteriorating wires & connectors, etc.)

Try that first. Maybe spend an extra $100 or so on a set of valve springs while you're at it. They make an AMAZING difference, even though it might not "seem like" they would matter.

The oil burning guy posted back in 2006 , which should have been a pretty good reason for KTMAC to have started his (her ? It's ?) own thread and left this one for dead ......

Yeah I miss that sort of thing sometimes.

I often wonder how new people stumble upon these archaic threads, with totally undistinguished titles like "oil burning"... that's about like hitting the Cooling board and searching for "overheating", and picking one from 2004 to tack a n00b question onto. Not sure how that works.

It has gotten to the point that I scroll back and skim over most if not all of the posts of a thread taking note of the dates before I post an answer . One time a guy bumped a thread from 2003 (back a couple of years ago) and I didn't notice it was an ancient thread and typed out a whole troubleshooting procedure for the OP , then saw the date of the OP when I hit Submit Reply .

Any thread old enough to vote is a thread best left in peace .

That was a classic. Some might call it "fake news" these days. (for some reason)

Something to ponder. Say you have a high mileage, yet good running engine. It blows a head gasket. replace the gaskets, service heads, as needed, Or swap in a reman engine, possibly with more cubes or power? In the first option, you basically have a "repair' in the second, an "upgrade". The second adds value, but at a cost. Whats better?
