oil filter adapter

Hi, I'm installing a 350 TPI into my 86 IROC. I'm just about to put the oil filter adapter plate on but I'm not sure if i'm suppose to have a gasket behind it or not? any help? does anyone know what size and length bolt goes in there?
thanks
Thomas

Are you talking about the oil cooler?

the oil filter adapter should have come with a gasket, at least every one i've ever installed has.

If you're talking about the oil cooler, then there should be an O-ring between it and the block. If you're talking about the oil filter adapter, then there is no gasket between it and the block.

its not the oil cooler. its a chunk of metal that bolts to the block with two bolts. and then you screw your oil filter onto it. the shop that rebuilt the engine took it off when they stripped it. I'm just trying to figure out if I need a gasket between the part and the block.

all my oil filter adapters came with gaskets to mount between that and the block. Perhaps they're not needed but all mine have them, done 6 or 7 sbc now and they always had a gasket in the packaging.

I don't think you're talking about the same thing.

There's nothing wrong with using it on an aftermarket adapter like that one, but the stock adapter doesn't use a gasket because it's not an area where a gasket is needed. The pressure difference between the two sides is pretty low, just the pressure drop across the oil filter, and any tiny amount of oil that did leak past it still ends up going through the engine.

By the way, the bolts should be about 5/16-18, around 1 1/2" long, but with smaller heads than normal.

Mine didn't have a gasket stock, so I didn't put a gasket on it after I put it back on..? My rebuild book never mentioned a gasket, and i've never bought the part new so...

None of the stock ones I have ever seen have ever had a gasket so I have never put a gasket on there.
