305 TPI to a 350 TPI

1987 Camaro IROC-Z 700R4 transmission. Im planning on swapping out a 305 TPI for a 350 TPI vortec from scoggin dicky parts sdparts.com search tpi then sort from highest price to lowest and the motor will be at the top. The motor is a 360 HP motor. In order to complete my swap what would I all need to change other than Runners, Plenum, injectors, PROM, and a 350 knock sensor. also would my driveline and chasis be able to handle this motor?

I am not a swap-master, so I can't really help you out. But, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND buying subframe connectors.

Also, 3rd gen rear diffs are known for crapping out.

Ok I highly agree that I need sub frame connectors. In order to complete my swap would i need to buy a high performance 700r4? Or would the one that I have now be able to handle the torque and HP of this new engine? Also where would I be able to either buy a 350 prom or get the computer to custom burn one?

I don't know why you think you need to change your runners and plenum. They are identical between a TPI 305 and 350. These are the parts you need to change:

1. Your PROM - contact TPI Parts. Click the advertisement link on the right of this web page. I have used them before. The guys name is Angel, and he is very honest and reasonably priced.

2. The injectors - you need 22 lb./hr. units.

3. The Knock sensor - just get one for a 350 of the same year car

That's it. You don't have to change anything else.

Re: 305 TPI to a 350 TPI

Ok thank you for the help. Now I'm confused as to which one I need for my setup. This is my first fuel injected swap and im very new to this fuel injection swapping. I don't know which prom I need. Do i just get a 350 PROM or do I get a special ordered one? Because the engine that i'm getting isn't a regular 350 from another camaro that's why i'm asking. Now I already know that you told me that all i need is injectors, PROM, and the Knock sensor. What about the M.A.F and the M.A.P sensors. Or will the PROM Adjust the readings for the 350? Again sorry for all the questions I just want to do it right the first time.

Re: 305 TPI to a 350 TPI

Just get a PROM for the same year car, but for a 350. If your car is a stick shift there is no factory 350/stick PROM, but you can have one custom burned. TPI Parts can do this for you. In fact the custom chip will be soldered on an adapter plate. You plug the adapter plate into the computer, and your old chip plugs in the side of the adapter. The custom chip will override the stock 305 chip. He can tweak other settings like fan temps too. If your car has an auto trans he can just sell you a stock 350 chip, unless you want a custom one. Don't worry about the other sensors. They are the same no matter whether you have a 305 or 350. Just make sure to change the knock sensor. It's the only one that's different. It doesn't matter whether your engine is from a Camaro or not as far as the chip is concerned. All the chip knows is the displacement of the cylinders, and in this respect a 350 is a 350. You do however need to worry about what year the block is, because the intake manifold bolt angles changed in 87. Ie: An 87 intake manifold won't fit 86 heads and vice versa.

'87 is mass air flow (MAF), not speed density (SD) like a '90, so the PROM really doesn't need to be changed just for the displacement change. There were some minor differences between the 305 and 350 PROM that gave the 350 a little more spunk, but it isn't absolutely required for the swap.

Ok please don't take this as a flame, but that is terrible advice. Why would you not want to change it when it only costs about $65? 45 cubic inches is a significant difference, not to mention the different injectors and knock sensor. Will it run on the old chip...well yeah the MAF will help compensate a little, but it won't run as well as it should, and horse power and torque will suffer.
