Ok i bought my first Firebird this past February it was a 305 but the guy before me put a 350 into it (and did a crap job on it too) well anyway 2 weeks ago i bought another Firebird same year (1989) for $500. she said it didn't run and i didn't care because it looked good and i thought it might just be a head gasket, because she said it had no compression. had it towed home and the next day i started looking at it and found that there wasn't any anti freeze in the radiator but plenty in the oil so i thought head gasket... to make a long story short it appears she ran it really hot and messed up the cylinder walls, pistons and it looks like the rings got cooked too..... short of a rebuild/ machining there is no hope... the moter is a V6 2.8 MPFI and i haven't heard anything good about them and when looking for a replacement all i found was a rebuild for $1100... so my question is what other options do i have for a V6 that will drop in with out to much screwing around?

BTW this site is amazing! i have already used it a couple times to help figure out things with my other car. Great job guys.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

The 2.8's had weak spots. They don't have to be abused to fail. Most likely you have a cracked block, and water got into the oil, the water killed lubrication, and you see the results. The 3.1's fixed those problems. If you can find one of those used, that's one option.

http://www.sdparts.com/product/12363...eAssembly.aspx . Don't worry about their disclaimers, it will work fine under MPFI. Check out the V6 forum for details on what is needed to install it (some things that need to come off the 2.8 and go onto the 3.4).

That would be awesome except that i live in NW Indiana... >.< if you are willing to give a good price it could be a definite possibility... it would most likely have to be shipped seeing as gas keeps going up

Yea... that would be a lil of a hike.... to be honest... it probably wouldn't be worth the shipping.. it's only a 2.8...

That's cool... Just keep in mind the biggest you can go to with the stock tranny is a 3.4.
