performance car
Hi everybody,
I´m new here on this board and so I wanted to introduce myself to you.
My name is Robby, 26 and from germany. I got an 89 Iroc as a daily driver and a 91 RS V6 with a little crash front left, which I got for low. I want to make a real performance car out of it, like it was never seen in germany!
Therefore I have so many questions hoping you can/will help me. Because here in germany only few people know something about american cars...
So let´s start.
In another thread someone wantet a "killer motor" and five7kid made the suggestion with this one:
http://www.ultrastreet.net/434_classic.asp
I think this is a very very nice motor for mine.
So here is the question;
What do I have to change in the V6, because I can´t imagine that anything will fit. Wireing harness, motor mounts and many other stuff will be completely different I think.
Thanks for your help guys!
PS: I know it will be very expensive, and will need a lot of time, help, blood and sweat but I hope/i´m sure I will gain it with this community!
Bye

Re: performance car
Oh man, I just read the article "V6 to a V8 swap" yet...
Now I feel a little bit dump.
I think it´s much better to take my Iroc for this project, or organize another V8 and start with that. Otherwise I have to change nearly everything for this undertaking, so I can just use the body of the car...
Or what do you think?

Re: performance car
Lots of us do V6-V8 swaps here in America, but parts are much easier to come by. If you can find a wrecked or junked V8 car to use for the swap then do it, if not, find a V8 car. You can use any 82 or newer Camaro or Firebird as your donor car and you'll do fine.
If you are dead set on the swap, you need two things for sure.
1. A V8 TH700R4. It must be for a rear wheel drive car or two wheel drive truck. A 4.3 V6 S-10 truck will be okay as well because they use the V8 transmission bolt pattern. Then you have to take the tailshaft housing off of your V6 Transmission and put it on your new 700R4 so that you can bolt your torque arm back on.
2. V8 motor mounts. These will not be expensive, even if you have to have them mailed to Germany.

Welcome to thirdgen.org.
I was in Mainz, stationed there with the US Army, the year you were born. I made it down to Munchen a few times.
If you want something like nothing seen on the autobahn, then I'd recommend going with an LS1 engine. Keep the fuel injection. T56 would be better for the cruising.
You can find take-out LS1/T56 combos on line (eBay, for example). It will cost you, but I'm sure you can find somebody to ship it over to you. The Shafiroff engine would be expensive to ship as well, so no real difference there.
LS1's can make a lot of power with pretty simple modifications. Perhaps not quite as much as that Shafiroff engine, but it will be a lot friendlier to drive than the Ultrastreet engine as well. To say nothing about being cheaper to feed.
The good news about V6 to LS1 is it's no more difficult than V6 to V8, or V8 to LS1.
If you want something like nothing else, you're going to have to bleed, sweat, and pay on it like no one else. There are rewards both in the process and the results.

Re: performance car
Hey guys, thx for the welcome greetings!
Kid, what do you mean with "more friendly to drive"? And why should I keep the fuel injection, isn´t it easier to get much hp out off a carb engine? Furthermore I´m not interested in high mpg driving, this should be just a car for nice sunday cruises and make some porsche drivers annoying...
Is it possible to get serious 500hp out off a LS1 at the rear wheel???
If there is a possibility, then let me know all the advantages of fuel injection, and what stuff I will need. Heads, headers, a supercharger I think...
The T-56 I wantet to install anyway, no matter what motor I will get. But is this trans able to handle such a high power??? Or do I have it to upgrade? Can I buy an already upgrated trans anywhere?
... ok, the trans will be able to handle the power, what´s with the clutch, I think I will need a heavy duty one, right?
And then the rear, I thougt about a Moser 9"... Was told this is the strongest one. Or are there any others, capable to handle and perhaps a little bit cheaper???
Sorry for so many question, but here in germany nobody is able to answer!

In general, carbureted cars aren't quite as responsive the throttle changes as EFI is. Of course, "properly tuned" makes either better.
The LS1 family is really very well suited for your environment. 500 HP is regularly achieved with those engines without sacrificing as much as you do with carbureted engines. 500 HP at the wheels requires more, of course, but still you'll get it with the LSx engines without sacrificing as much as you will with Gen I SBC's.
The T56 is a pretty stout transmission. 500 HP isn't a problem. LS7 clutch is what I've heard works well.
I tend to favor the 12 bolt over the 9". Both are equally strong, but the 12 bolt is more efficient. There is more stuff out there for the 9", though.

Re: performance car
That sounds quite good!!!
Now I "only" need the engine...
Does anybody knows where I can buy it? Because here I won´t get it. New it´s a little expensive, so I´m searching a good used one.
Otherwise i will need everything around like waterpump and so on, right?
Does anybody has an engine for me???

A10beav has done a LS swap and he is in Germany. I would get ahold of him before you do anything so you can get a idea.

Re: performance car
Either way you go there is a german shop outside of Wurzburg, believe the name is Sigis or Zigis, I used to get parts from. He ships large containers of parts for American cars over to Europe. The last time I was there a few years back he had alot of American engines and transmissions in the shop. Maybe talk to him about picking up a used L98, LS1, LT1 engine and trans. There is also a small shop outside of Heidleberg that has a couple of third gens and quite a few parts. I have also shipped a few engines over and the cost was between 550 and 800 dollars.

Re: performance car
You could probably find an older LS1 in some of the Vauxhalls that are in England and parts of Europe, they are the European version of the Holden (what the GTO was based on in America) I think they were actually called the Lumina SS.

I've seen the Lumina SS in Dubai, but not European mainland...

@ likeistolite
did you ship the engines over to him?
how did you do that? because i´m in negotiation with a board member to buy his engine.
what do you guys think about it:

I think this will be good for the beginning, and in one or two years i will bolt on a compressor.
