305 swap 84 camaro

Hey guys need advice on pulling a 350 from a local yunk yard. What would be the best engine to get,(what years, model) from a truck? a camaro with a 350? What 350 will not worK. Also my 84 camaro is a 305 h.o carb..
If I droped in a 350 will all the electronics still work like my ecm? What will need to be replaced.. Thanks for any feedback. I plan on pulling the engine this saturday and dont want to make a mistake on the engine.. Thanks..

Pretty much any year will work without too much trouble. If it's from before 1980 the dipstick will be on the other side, and if it's from after 1985 you'll need a different flywheel/flexplate.

You'll only want the 350 short block. Put the heads, intake, carb, accessories, manifolds, etc. from your LG4 onto it.

Re: 305 swap 84 camaro

So say I pulled a 350 short block from a 70's truck I would be ok? I Actually have the l69 engine. Will the dipstick be a problem with it being on the other side. So basiccaly all I have in the 305 the wiring and ecm will work with it??

Yes, everything will work with it. The dipstick on the other side isn't a major issue, you can tweak the tube around the exhaust manifold, or use an aftermarket tube and dipstick.

Re: 305 swap 84 camaro

why not take the time and pull it from a vehicle with a roller cam, and be miles ahead in technology, probably for the same price.

Re: 305 swap 84 camaro

it depends on how electronically inclined he is

if he is willing to swap computer and wiring

a 70s truck 350 is a smogger low horsepower dog

as were most all 70s engines

and most 80s ones as well

except in a few rare cases,

one that runs great and smooth and doesnt use oil is the one to get

regardless of year make model

and whatever one you find will probably not be the original one to the vehicle you find it in anyways

so ....

if you feel comfortable with ecm's and wiring then a nice 90s caprice 350 would be great

for example

only you know what you really want or are willing to do

not muh we can help you with, regarding this question

we dont know what you really want or how far you are willing to go

search for engines in your town/area:

Re: 305 swap 84 camaro

I am comfortable swaping computer and electronics and Im looking for around 300hp(Smog Legal). So basically your saying that a 90 and later engine would be my best bet? Is the 90 caprice also a carb engine ..Also what 350 comes with a roller cam? Sorry for all the Questions..

what engine did you have in mind??

Gads, no reason to get a bazooka to kill a gnat!

The HO computer will run a 350 just fine.

No reason to kill yourself finding a roller lifter block. If the 350 you get is roller lifter, fine, put a roller lifter cam back in it. If not, just get a nice flat tappet cam kit and be done with it.

Don't make this more complicated than it is.

No, it's TBI. And, less than desireable heads.

'87-up passenger cars w/350, '96-up trucks w/350. Some '87-'95 trucks had the blocks machined for roller lifter, but still had flat tappets. We just took a 350 out of my brother's '92 Suburban, it was machined but had flat tappets. I've seen others that weren't machined.
