700r4 to LS-1? Will it work?
I was reading the sticky on swapping in a LS-1 and the the part on transmissions wasnt too clear on the 700r4. will a 700r4 work or not? the article only says a 4l60e is just a 700r4 with electronics. Does that mean it will work or not?
Confused.

You will have to rig up for the TV cable to the throttle body, but easiest way to go is to get a 4L60E, you'll save yourself alot of headaches doing that.

Yeah, a 4l60E would definately be the easier way, however I just spent about $900 on a bulletproof 700R4 that I havent even put in the car yet. I was going to swap in a T.P.I. 383 but got a truly good deal on a LS-2 from a wrecked GTO. I could use the t-56 it came with but I like having at least 1 "lazy-shift" (Automatic). Still, will it bolt up? If my only problem is going to be the T.V. cable then it will be easier than I thought....

Re: 700r4 to LS-1? Will it work?
well i have a 700r4 hooked up to my 5.3 LSx swap, all i did was get the gm flywheel for LS motors which allows them to hook up to older tranny's, then bowtie overdrives sell the tv cable to hook up to an LS motor, the tranny bolts right up to the LS motor all bolts line up except the motor doesnt have one, so you'll end up one bolt less, and the only thing that you'll have to figure out is the speed, and lock-up converter, but theres kits for that, i just havent dont it, i'm broke.

The LS2s use a totally different PCM than the LS1 or truck engines use, might be worth digging around on LS2.com and see.

Metalic5; I appreciate that. you mean there is a spedometer problem? The lock-up problem is easy to fix.
thank you.

Klortho; The ls-2 I'm looking at has the 6-speed hooked to it, but no electronics. I think I'm going to use a FAST xfi for the electronics. I havent made up my mind weather or not to use the 6-speed in my camaro or not. I have an el camino that I am building an LS-7 for and it is almost done. I would really like to put that in my el camino! Do you know if I am going to have to get a camaro oil pan or will the GTO pan work in my camaro with k-member mods?
Thank you!

On some flexplates, you have to get an adapter plater to match the that to the converter. not sure about the details on that tho.

Does anybody have the answers to the flexplate adaptor issue? These engines have been around for a while and yet it seems that no one has the answers to them.

Re: 700r4 to LS-1? Will it work?
easiest setup in my opinion is the 6.0L flexplate with GM spacer and spacer bolts. bolt holes directly line up with large bolt pattern th400/350/700-r4 torque converters since 4l80s use the same pattern. a washer between the TC and flexplate and you should be fine on spacing then. you will need something to fix the TV cable though.

I would say don't waste your time on a 700. I bought one that was supposedly a great rebuild with a nice shift kit. It lasted one run before it started slipping. I would say T-56 which is what I am running now and love it, or 4l60e.

Re: 700r4 to LS-1? Will it work?
no reason an incompetant tranny builder should give a tranny a bad name, there is nothing wrong with a properly built 700
i would agree, a 6 speed would be a blast tho!

Re: 700r4 to LS-1? Will it work?
I appreciate all the help. Still havent made up my mind on the tranny issue. The shop building my 700R4 is sort of a friend of a friend sort of deal. They havent said what the "real-world" price would be if I was just some joe off the street, and I consider it to be rude of me if I were to ask, but I suspect it would be around 2500.oo! I really dont want to abandon what is undoubtably an awesome tranny. I figure if I blow it up, then I can always put the T-56 in.... Still havent figured out the T.V. cable issue,however...

If they can build a proper TH700R-4, they can build a proper 4L60E.

The point is to get something to work.
Putting time and money into something that needs to be crutched and band aided doesn't make sense when most any competent transmission shop can build, and very likely has or can easily get, something originally made for the task.
It wouldn't surprise me that there have been more 4L60E's made than TH700's.
