I want a 350!
i 've got my stock 305 on my RS and i'm ready to take it up to the next level. where can i get a new engine and how much does it usually cost?
Re: I want a 350!
hey I am looking at doing the same thing, I am checking out some gm performance crate engines. But I want to wait for 6 months and study all my options. I may keep the stock ecm and have a prom programmed on a dyno or look at a stand alone fuel managment system.

Re: I want a 350!
their are to many places to buy crate motors to even begin to list but try summit or jegs to name one of the two most well known suppliers. and cost depends on alot of things, all 350s wont cost the same even from the same company because some may have different internals i.e. forged vs cast or better heads, turn key vs long/short block yadda yada yadda. are you just looking for a basic turn key 350 or something with a lil more pep? it all depends on what you are willing to pay.

Re: I want a 350!
the most cost effective way to get a 350 is look on craigslist and this board for a rebuilt short block with low miles... the deals are out there you just have to be patient... Ive been looking for a short block with 20k or less with mostly stock parts for the last 4 months or so... Ive seen alot but I just found the deal Ive been looking for.. rebuilt short block, no miles but its been sitting for a little over a year in an unheated garage so theres a little bit of surface rust on the very edges of the bores, Im getting it for $240 with a roller cam and new roller lifters and a timing chain. I already have heads and tpi intake. Find machine shops or race shops in your area, you never know what might be sitting around. Or summit has motors buy a co called blueprint engines that are well priced, I believe theres a motor for $2500 thats like 450hp turn key.

Re: I want a 350!
Okay......... maybe you should buy a new motor....I drive 1 1/2 hours to go pick up this motor, everything looked good.. cross hatched, new freeze plugs, new pistons. so I get home put it on the stand and pull the main and rod caps and yank the cam.. all the main bearings are worn and the 3rd one is showing copper, the rod bearings are worn and so are the cam bearings ..
.... the guy told me hell give me my money back and hes as shocked as I am but that doesnt give back my time getting and returning it or the money for gas. Im so bummed is not even funny.

The other option is getting a 350 cheap and rebuilding it. It is a great learning experience if you haven't done it before.

I went with the 350 HO Deluxe from Jeg's. Pretty much a turn-key.

Re: I want a 350!
Keep looking,,, after the 350 with "no miles fiasco" I found a guy 2 hours from my house selling a 355 with 0 miles on it, forged pistons, spi flexplate, polished crank.four bolt mains, brand new xe268h cam with lifters, new water pump , oil pump and .030 milled and rebuilt 801 heads for $500 and I offered $300 to pick it up the next day... he was selling it for a friend who owed him money and the guy said come pick it up
... keep looking the deals are out there... this particular one may very well be once in a lifetime though
. Good luck

Agreed. I'm doing a full build now that my bird is off the road and I think i'll appreciate it much more (and take care of it more for that matter) if I did everything myself.

Re: I want a 350!
I already bought it and inspected it... its perfect, the only marks on the bearings are from me turning the motor, his friend had it built and sat on it for 1 year for his malibu, sold the car and never put it in. He had it posted at 500 firm for a week and a half on chitownracing.com. the paint on the block and heads had rust come thru it and looked like $&%^ from sittin in a garage. Was totally assembledwith oil pan, heads and intake bolted on, internals are flawless. I really really lucked out.
