Ok, now im confused? A.I.R, computer..etc?

Ok, wow i thought I understood what was going on until I read up on this topic.

I have a 1986 z28, the original engine was a carb'd 305. When I got the car the engine was pretty much done with. The engine that I am putting in it FOR NOW is a Carb'd 305 from an 82-83 camaro, there are like no electrical connections on this one. This engine does not have any emissions parts on it or an AIR system or anything. Im going to buy some new headers on it when I drop it in. Do I have to get an exhaust system without an A.I.R set up or anything?

Is this engine going to start right up or am I going to have issues?
Does my car have a computer? I was under the impression that it didn't but the conflicting answers have gotten me confused!

Thanks for your help,
-Andrew

emission will be based off year of car so yes you'll need smog pump, air tubes, and cats(anything the stock '86 had)....and I'm pretty sure u have a computer.

If you just swap long blocks (block, heads), all of the stuff that comes off your '86 will bolt to the '82-'83. One thing that won't is the flexplate, but hopefully the "new" engine still has that.

Yes, your '86 has a computer (or, at least it did from the factory). Use the carb, distributor, wiring, sensors, computer, et al, from the '86 on the '82/'83 engine. Technically, the older engine isn't emissions legal in the newer chassis, but to at least look and sniff legal, you need all of the stuff off of the '86 on the older engine.

Well on the topic of emission testing, I know what's going on with that. Im talking more along the lines of... what am I going to have to do to get this engine to run correctly in my car.

Re: Ok, now im confused? A.I.R, computer..etc?

Sorry, i should have been more informative. The new engine is complete, it has a bigger carb..etc.. this is what im asking: Since a new engine is going into my car, and it has no emissions, and my car was set up for the old engine with emissions, am I going to have to do anything with the computer? How about the exhaust, since my last engine was equipped with an A.I.R set up?

Thanks,
-Andrew

I'll stick with my original recommendation.

If you don't use the '86 carb & distributor, you will have to use different of both.

Exhaust will just swap over to the other engine.

You did say this is a "for now" engine. So, for now, use the '86 controls, etc.

Oh, you have a T5, right? Your current flywheel won't fit the older engine.

Ok, well like I said one the first post, the old engine is pretty much done. The carb would prolly need to be rebuilt and everything. Why exactly would it be better to use the stuff from my old engine?

And yea, I know about the flywheel,
Thanks

What carb and distributor are on the "new" engine?

Re: Ok, now im confused? A.I.R, computer..etc?

for emission reasons you have to have the a.i.r. pump and everything that came stock (emissions wise on your original motor.)

But if you live in a emission free zone as i do. you dont have to have air or anything like that....

But remember that emissions can always be put into place in your area... so maybe buy the smog pump, just in case.

The rule is you can put an older motor in your car as long as you fit it with the emission things it came stock with. I.e. My 1992 Camaro has a cat and a smog pump. But i am throwing in a 1970 block that didn't come with either, to make it pass emissions i have to put a smog pump on it and make sure i have a working cat.

And if you put a new (92 or newer in my case) motor in your car, you have to make sure the newer motor has the emissions that it came with stock from the factory. Unless its a track only car.

atleast thats how it is here in colorado. (just not for me gotta love living in the country and an emissions free state (at the moment)
