rebuilding 350 help

I'm thinking of rebuilding a 350 motor and putting it in my 92 stock rs. i'm buying a rebuild kit that has hypereutectic cast pistons, speed pro piston rings, main, cam and rod bearings, oil pump, gaskets, and freeze plugs. i'm gonna get the pistons and the block bored .030 over. does anyone know what else i would need to make the swap and what not? and on average how much horsepower i could get out of this thing?

hyper pistons aren't cast pistons, you only bore the block. you've covered the basics. i'd go for a new cam and lifters, new timing chain and gears, and new rod blots. get the valves and seats reground. you might want to consider having the block decked and the heads resurfaced.

Have to disagree with you slightly, ede: Hypereutectic piston ARE cast, vs. forged. They are cast using an aluminum alloy that has a silicon content above the eutectic point. They are a cheap alternative to forged, stronger than normal cast.

Other than that, Jill, have your 350 mic'd (measured) before you get the pistons to insure .030 is enough to clean up the cylinders. Then give the pistons to the machine shop so they can do the final honing to get the right clearance with your pistons. Resizing the rods and putting on new rod cap nuts, if not entire bolts, is good insurance. I agree with ede about the cam and all. Better heads such as World would probably run better than factory 350 heads (depending upon what you've got).

Not sure what you mean by "swap": V-6 to V-8? 305 to 350? If the latter, 350 knock sensor and module, harmonic balancer, and possibly flex plate/flywheel depending upon the vintage of your 350. If the former, the list is long.

by swap i mean from a 305 to a 350. i'm not too smart on this stuff so i'm gonna ask what might be a stupid quesiton. my friend told me that if i get it bored .030 over it would pretty much be the same as a 383 motor. i want to make sure that i'm gonna get the performance i want out of this motor or else i'm gonna save more money and get a new one.

A 383 is a 350 block bored .030" over and has a longer stroke crank. A .030" over 350 is a 355. Building a 383 is a big step compared to rebuilding a 350. If that's what you want, your best bet would be to buy a built engine. 383's require different balancer and flexplate/flywheel than 350's or 305's.

What induction setup do you have now, TBI or TPI? If TPI, you should consider an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Larger injectors (22 lb vs. 19 lb) are the typical 350 size, but higher fuel pressure will get you by.

Also since it's a 92 you're gonna need an HEI vacuum dist, the stock ones out of the 305 and 350's of that year were computer controled. Oh yeah, are you going to use TPI? If so then the distrib can be reused. Also you're going to want to have an 87+ later 350 block with the 1 piece rear seal so the swap is easier. Good luck and about the 350 bored out 3 over, it only = 355. A 350 stroked is a 377 and a 350 bored 3 over and stroked is a 383. The advantage of the 350 and 383 over the 305 is the bore. 4" compared to the 305's 3.75". Do the surface area calculations and you can see why a 350 has ~15-25% more power potential. Stick with the 355 and don't go into a 383 build unless you're ready to spend more money on a better radiator, 400 flexplate, 400 crank, harm. balancer, etc. They're all externally balanced so they're more expensive. Good luck.

What kind of induction are you gonna use? Your TBI or what? I have done the swap using a Street and Performance MPFI unit which came with a new ECM. If your going with a carb then I agree with the above post with using a vac. dist.. If you use the original TBI I would say at least get a custom chip made up and don't forget the knock sensor. And also find yourself a dual fan setup. Headers and a 3" exhaust would be nice too.

haven't decided on if i want to stick with the TBI or go carburated. i'm up in the air at the moment. i want a 383 really bad, but i will settle for a 355 if i can get alot of power out of it. i have a certain someone who i am desperate to beat in a street race. that and i'm sick of not being able to beat a stock mustang. i only have $600..the block, intake manifold, a decent crank, water pump, and a carb if i decide to go that way. if i can get a kit for $200...and i do all the work myself..think i can afford it??

I'd think you'd have trouble getting it done for $600. Last time I checked (a couple of years ago), dipping the block, boring and installing cam bearings was $250. Already you're up to $450. Installing pistons on rods was $8/each, $482. Turning crank $75, $557. You might be able to get better prices than these, but you still haven't touched the heads or intake.

Are you allowed to pick your cam with this kit? If not, they're usually pretty mild. Upgrades are typically allowed, but might cost more. Exhaust makes a big difference in power to the tires, that alone could bust your budget, and should really be done to let that 350 do its thing.

On the other hand, spending $600 on a good exhaust system would make your 305 run bunches better, and if you pick it correctly, would fit and work with your 350 or even that dream 383 when you have the funds to do it.

you may think this is funny but, when I decided to put a 350 in my car I really looked around and found the napa rebuilt 350 is your best bet. or one simmilar.

That is kinda funny that napa would have the best. If i'm gonna buy a rebuilt engine i'm gonna go with a 383 from this one place. but for that i'd need $2,249 that i just dont have. i bought the flowmaster muffler (piece of sh**) and had a buddy at midas bend the pipes for me and stuff. hollowed out converter. thats about it.

I still say for now improve your exhaust. Spend the $600 on SLP headers & y-pipe, and a 3" high-flow cat. Get the 1-3/4" primary headers, even though you'll be putting them on a 305 initially. You'll probably lose a little low-end torque, but it'll run better on the top end. And, they'll be what you need for that 383.

Okay, I might be wrong on something. A 383 is a 350 block with a 400 crank. A 377 is a 400 block with a 350 crank. Or am I right about the 377 being a 350 with a 400 crank and a 383 is a 350 bored 3 over with a 400 crank? I thought I did my math right. If I'm correct then people have to start telling us on other messages if they're talking about destroking or stroking, because I'm still a bit foggy with this engine mix and match stuff.

This is covered in other posts, but both the 383 and 377 use blocks that are bored .030" over stock.

To say it once again, a 383 uses a 350 block and 400 crank, and a 377 uses a 400 block with a 350 crank.

350 bore = 4.000 inch
350 stroke = 3.48 inch
400 bore = 4.125 inch
400 stroke = 3.75 inch

Recheck your math.

you can get a 377 out of a 350 block if you have a std bore 350. its also a 400 block punched .030 with a 350 crank.
