It takes more fuel to fill more CID but it also depends on gearing and tire size. My daily driver 454SS gets 10-12 mpg but so did my old 4x4 with a 350. I really notice poor milage if it idles for any length of time like when warming it up in the morning when it's cold. With the OD tranny I've also gotten close to 17 mpg on the highway.

We don't want to talk about milage with the race car. If I'm lucky it might be as high as 4 mpg.

I haven't driven my combo yet except for down the backlane, but I would be extremely lucky if I could get 10 mpg. I did this swap without regard to fuel economy. 454/ 4.10/ gas pedal always on the floor. Sometimes you just have to pay to play!

On another note, I just picked up an S10 manual steering box for cheap. I guess that solves my p/s pump mounting problems! HEHE

Do shoebox Chevy's count?

In May '98, I took a 900 mile round-trip to a highschool reunion in the '57. Had 3.36 gears at the time but the stock convertor. Averaged right at 14 mpg.

It drops down to about 11 commuting. But, that's hard to tell for sure because of those darn 1320's on Friday nights...

There is only two places where they have emission testing in Canada. 1) The Lower Mainland of BC which uses the dyno and has levels lower than even California and 2) I believe in the lower part of Ontario around Toronto. This was suppose to be put in a few years ago and I am no sure if it was ever brought in and if so what their standards are or method of testing.

There is increasing pressure for Canada to do more emission testing from the US EPA, but given the remoteness of some areas and limited population it doesn't make sense for someone in the Yukon to emission test his truck when he uses his snowmobile just as much, if not more. Also, regulations regarding automobiles are currently a provincial jurisdiction, not federal.

I doubt the government of Alberta is going to risk political defeat bringing in emission testing when the major cities are located on flat regions and any air pollution is quickly blown away. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland of BC is trapped around mountains and is very similar to Los Angelos in how the pollution gets trapped and lingers for days.

I get around 8 mpg in town and that's with a 427 & T400 with 3.27 gears and 26in tires. It only gets worse from there

I live 100 km north of Toronto. This will be our first year of emmision testing. Cars that are required to be test are from 3 years old to 20 years. My z28 is an 82. I have to get it tested this year. Since this is the first for our area the first test will cost $39 cdn. If you fail then the testing centre is supposed to give you a list of possible problems. A retest is to cost no more then $15. If you fail this test then you can pay a one time fine/fee of $200 which will give you an emission's pass until the next time.

with a street strip 454 i was getting 6 mpg on the highway ( the 850 double pumper didn't help economy) a mild converter and gears will help, but don't expect much over 12 mpg

This car gets about 15 on the highway and about 12 around town, with 3.42 gears...

IMHO, if you have a big block car, you have to learn to consider yourself being above trivial things like gas mileage

Check out www.Rancefi.com He custom makes manifolds for all applications and his systems rock! My cousins 351 windsor averaged about 21 mpg in the city. I am putting accell DFI in the car with the new motor.

World products Sportsman II heads. Lunati pistons and custom ground camshaft. Will dyno after the break in but is estimated at 450 hp and 520 ftlbs. The T-5 is on a suicide mission.

In Toronto, Emissoins testing is highly debated. Some even talk of scrapping the system since most shops are failing people on purpose for more coin. A buddy of mine has an 87 rx7. He failed twice from the same guy and finally brought to a different place. The guy purged the sniffer and used a LOWER gear and the rx7 passed. Apparently, those rottary rx7's run a little more rich in the lower RPM band...

My 89GTA passed with no problems with no AIR, a high flow cat and the mods below. They didn't even open my hood AT ALL.

OK... a lot of you guys are going to think I failed math... well I did, but i can divide. My 71RS with 460 th400 3.42's and crazy roller cam (688"lift) got about 17 to 18 mpg. Car weighs 3770lbs. 750 Holley.
I used to daily drive this car but still spent 50 a week in gas when it was a buck a gallon. Sucked!
What a lot of people don't realize is that your peak torque should be right at your cruise RPM or real close for optimum mileage. For me that was at 3K RPM'S (also 80 mph) Now that I put a 200 4R trans in it that is probably going to go down a bit.
It seems that everyone is afraid of big blocks and overdrive... don't hook and it should live fine.
