corvette heads?
corvette heads?
Can anybody give me some info on a corvette aluminum head casting # 10088113?
I'm building a 350 SBC, and a local guy is selling these heads for a decent price. Previously, I planned on using Vortec L31 heads. Are these a good head? How does it compare to the L31? Is there any emission problems (besides no heat riser) that I should know about?
thanks

The "113"'s are a great head. I have a set and love them. I had the ported and polished and added 2.00 / 1.60 valves. The only problem is with compression. They are a 58cc head. If you are below 9.0:1 now, you should be alright.

I run the vette heads also, and have nothing but good things to say about them. With a little porting they can be competitve with many aftermarket heads. I'd have to say that the vortec heads still offer a better value for money if you can work with that intake pattern.

I also have them fully ported and polished. I was told by many publications that the vette heads work 30% better on a 305TPI than a 350 TPI. Must of spent $800.00 on the heads and porting job and probably outflow SOME aftermarket heads.

I talked with a couple of Chevy Dealers: Sallee and Scoggin Dickey, not to mention my machinist. Anyway, without exception they all favored the vortec over the "113" head. The guys at Scoggin Dickey had the most concrete answer: they tested this exact combo - i.e. a SBC with same cam and everything else, tried the "113" heads then tried the Vortec and got a BIG increase in HP. I think he said they've gotten as much as 410 HP out of the vortec heads in stock configuration.
Not to say that porting and polishing would improve the '113', but out of the box it looks like a no-brainer. I have to admit though, that the aluminum heads seem like a good way to go. But, they're 10 year old design and it looks like the vortec beats them out. Go figure. There's also a web site, cant remember the name, that has comparison flow numbers for these heads. Same story, the vortec beat out the '113' in all respects.
go figure.

This may all be a mute point now. I just got the paperwork on the new Edelbrock "e-tech"(?) heads. I guess the are aluminum versions of the vortec. I cannot wait to see how much though!
