305 to 350 swap TPI
305 to 350 swap TPI
Ok I know that you guys get these all the time but I couldnt find what I needed to know. Ok my little 305 is geting OLD and I need to figure out what Im gona do. I whant to end up with around 280hp and 360lb/tq(no more I know about the T-5s duribility) I know that getting these numbers out of a 305 would be a bitch so I think that I will have to size up to a 350. I have looked into this some and am really geting into the whole DIY prom board so i think that I can handle the computer end of the deal. But I need to know a few things. (keep in mind that I have little money and am gona try and do this on my tax return Money) also to keep the cost down I could do it in steps and work my way up to the setup that will give me what I want so I guess that my first priority is geting the 350 in and running
Other then the obveous stuff I.E. injectors...... what will not switch right over I have heard that the manifolds are differnt(will I need headers to get to the power #s I want any way)
whats a good cam too use (I want to keep the hyd./roller tappets)
I dont have a 350 block yet and I can get a 91 350 4bolt for 200$ but It needs the normal bore and crank turn work done to it yet. would I be better off getting a block out of a rearended truck with low miles on it or is that to risky (also more costly?)
anyone who has done this befor please help me out
sorry about how long this turned out but if your reading this THANKS
thanks

Okay, the 350 under the 305 TPI routine:
Has been done by many. Keeping the roller cam will require you to stay away from truck engines (unless you verify before the cash changes hands that it already has a roller cam). Port the plenum. Add adjustable fuel pressure regulator (try your 19lb injectors before you shell out for 22lb - they may work just fine). Hooker 2055 or SLP headers. ZZ4 or LT4 Hot Cam, or Comp roller cam, with valve springs to match. Perhaps a 52mm TB, better runners, gasket-matched intake. '87-later heads will fit your intake, '86-earlier can be fitted by elongating the center-two intake bolt holes on each side. Factory heads are often the limiter for good performance - World S/R Torquers or something similar are available to fix that problem, and have bolt patterns to match your intake.
You want 280 hp? Can be done with the 305 WITHOUT getting radical. How? Assuming what is "old" about your 305 is its current power level and not blow-by, do the following:
World Products 305 S/R heads, pocket ported and gasket matched - $650-700 if you buy them unassembled and do the porting yourself. Then the other stuff, with the possible exception of the TB, mentioned in the paragraph above. Popular Hot Rod did this to a 305 TPI, with a mild Comp Cams computer-compatible cam and without the runners or intake or TB change, and came up with 275 HP on the dyno - it was not "radical", "tweaky", "peaky", or anything like that. Bigger cam, induction mods, you're at your power level with good driveability maintained.
Whichever you do, headers and 3" cat & cat-back should be considered manditory. As for 305 vs 350, your desire to limit HP/torque makes the 305 build-up sensible.

I know that this has been posted over and over but I feel that I do have some unique questions Im not the new guy throughing around $h!t posts any how.
I thought that after 87 all SBC were set up for the hyd./roller setup(at the same time they did the one peace rear main seal)
As for my injectors i need to reaplace them anyway the hold pressure like a screen door and when I ohm'ed them out they were geting up there on the scale so I need new ones anyway.
I only will have about 800$ to do this with so like I said in steps.....
What would be some good downer cars to look for my 350 in. I know that I dont "NEED" the 4 bolt mains.....
Oh ya and by saying my 305s "geting OLD" I ment 1480000miles old (small knock)

I'm not sure what I said to get your feathers ruffled, but...
Not all post-'87 SBC's got roller lifters. Trucks may or may not, but mostly not. All Camaro/Firebird SBC's were, but be careful out there. If you want roller and somebody is offering you a loose 350, pull at least the distributor and look to see if it's flat or roller tappet.
You aren't going to get much for $800. What you will get will probably need rebuild, like your example. Using your '91 that needs a rebuild, for instance, you can get a decent overhaul kit with pistons for about $250-300, more if a roller cam is included. Machine work will run you between $300-400. You're already at/over budget assuming you paid $200 for the engine, and you haven't touched the heads yet.
Not sure exactly what is unique about your questions, but having almost 1.5 million miles on a 305 is something to crow about...
Sincerely,
Native Husker

As I mentioned in another post, you don't want a four bolt block. If you want 4 bolt mains, get a two bolt block and have the other bolts drilled and tapped splayed.
I don't think you can do what you want to do with a 350 for the budget your setting aside.

Your best bet is starting with a roller block. If you start earlier, you need to find a way to retain a roller cam (thrust button) and use aftermarket ($$$) roller lifters because there is no easy way to use stock lifters in a non-roller block (no 'spider')
Basically a roller 350 block is a drop in and raise the fuel pressure to 50 psi with the stock injectors.

I tend to respond to a lot of posts, so rather than use the same words over and over, I tend to "spice it up" once in awhile. It appears I went overboard in this case - my apologies. I got a little too light-hearted with a secretary this morning who had been on hold for an hour with the travel agency, - I don't think she likes flowers, so I'm up the perverbal creek.
Do you like flowers? Never mind. Anyway, I'll repeat what I said, and Russ echoed that you'll be a long way from your goal with your budget. If you go with Hooker shorties or Edelbrock TES, 3" high flow cat, and cat-back, that will just about eat up your budget. You might be able to squeeze in subframe connectors. But, that's a good start, and will be a good foundation for future mods when more funds become available.
I've been working on my '57 for 29 years, and I still have things I'm waiting to do. Just finished installing the MegaShifter last night, for instance, and will be putting in the PowerTrax tomorrow. I've been racing since 1978, and this is the first year I'll have posi...
