454 Motor Mounts
454 Motor Mounts
Hi there, I need some help with motor mounts. I have read several articals were they say to use a spacer with the motor mounts to get the clearance for the oil pan. I'm going to use a 5 quart pan, is this true?

Re: 454 Motor Mounts
When I put my first BBC into my car, I just used the factory engine mounts. There's no clearance issues. Normally the SBC/BBC mount difference is because the BBC will sit slightly higher. Using BBC specific mounts will lower it back down to a SBC height. Although a BBC will sit slightly higher, this isn't a big problem in a third gen since the car isn't designed for a BBC anyway. In older vehicles which could have either engine from the factory, the different motor mounts made a big difference.

Thanks, I'm going to do a test fit this weekend using SBC motor mounts.
Is there going to be an issue with the transmission mounts if the rear of the engine is higher.

Bellhousing bolts will be a little more difficult than normal to access but that's about it. It doesn't raise it up drastically.

Re: 454 Motor Mounts
I recently put a 454 in my 92 using the big block engine mounts. It caused the engine to sit about an inch or two higher and the engine is not level. The left side of the engine is higher than the right side. My hooker engine swap headers say that "the oringinal small block engine mounts and pads must be used for the swap"

Re: 454 Motor Mounts
Its held up behind my 454 with no problems. It is however a low compression motor home engine that makes probably 500 foot pounds tops. I am running 100 octane and 42 degreess of total ignition timing too. I need a start retard lol.

Re: 454 Motor Mounts
I'm going to the garage where my BB is so as to check the motor mounts there. We had it in a '74 Camaro using BB mounts on the frame & motor. We had a couple thin triangle shaped pieces btween the frame & mount. IDK why but the place we got the mounts from tossed them in free & recomended using them.
So, to use Hooker swap headers, the original 3rdgen mounts should be used, &
they will keep the BB lower allowing a lil more room to the hood..?..

Re: 454 Motor Mounts
Thats what the instructions that came with the headers said. "original motor mounts and pads MUST be used". My engine is too high and the collector on the driver side is hitting the floor board because of it.
