zz4 swap!

I read an article in super chevy about putting a ZZ4 in a camaro and sounded pretty easy. is it as easy as it sounds or am i being mis-lead? has anyone else ever done this? what are some problems I may encounter?what are some things i can do to beef up the tranny? all you're input is appreciated.

The swap is easy but has a few snags. Depending on the year of you car (if you has a serpentine belt or multi belt system and the bolt angle of you center intake manifold bolts) on my 91 the pass. side head had to be drilled for the AC bracket to fit and I would have had to re-drill my manifold boltholes but I went with a super ram base that is drilled for both. Other than making sure you change the ZZ4 water pump to a reverse rotation like is on you car now and depending on the year of you car it may or may not have a roller cam (has small dis. shaft size 90,91,92 I think) if it does than your old distributor will be fine work fine if not (older cars larger dis. shat size you will have to swap the gear off of the one that comes with the ZZ4. It is an easy swap well worth the effort but take my advise don't use your stock base and runners get a high flow base from Edelbrock or Accel and runners from AS&M or SLP and port your upper (SLP must be ported to make as much power as AS&M) the stock tpi just does not flow enough to keep the ZZ4 happy. I hope this helps a little.

Your tranny may be ok for street driving but if you plan to take it to the track and hook up you will kill it, have a pro shop build it for you that kows how to build it for the level of power you will have. Don't just get a shift kit and think it will hold up.

Yes, but it is not the appropriate HEI distributor to use with a computer controlled ignition on the TPI system it will not work.

Hey pronger44 this is off the subject, who do you run with in Indianola? I grew up in Milo and finished High School in Indianola. In fact I use to live with Corey Taylor(singer for slipknot) and his Grandma in Des Moines after high school before I moved to S.C.

In an 83 Z with crossfire, would it be possible to swap in a ZZ4, put on a carb and get rid of the computer? Or is the computer needed for the transmission? Are there any clearance problems if a Holley 750 is used?
