Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
Are the heads ported? We really can't even take a guess without knowing the casting numbers of the heads. Last year of the manual fuel pump depends on what the motor is out of, Chevy used the manual fuel pump until it was forced to change for the higher demand of fuel injection.

Pop off a valve cover and write down the casting numbers and post them up. The heads can change your HP rating from 200 to 300 or maybe even 300+... We can't make an accurate estimate.

Doesn't help. Some of the worst factory heads ever made had 1.94"/1.50" valve. So did some of the best.

Dart or Etec heads. Both will run you around $800 for a set of heads.
Or you can pick up a cheap set of vortec heads.

Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
I'm running Vortecs on my 357 right now. I'm pleased with them. I got them for $50 and they flow outstanding numbers for being mass produced stock casting heads. I would have upgraded this year but i got a Vette to finish for this spring. Maybe next winter..... Go Vortec if you don't have much to spend, if you have money go with a nicer head, its that simple.

Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
Assuming better heads like 083's that came on L98's, about 350-370 HP. But, your intake and carb are a mis-match for your cam. Consider a Performer RPM and 650 double pumper, and you're probably more like 375 or better.
Vortec heads and Performer RPM Vortec intake, 650 CFM carb, you should be around 400 HP.
Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
ok thanx...i am going to try to get the numbers off the heads tomoro. i have some heads that came off a 94 z71 with centerbolt valve covers out in the shed. are the considered vortec?

No, those are considered swirlports. Fine for a stock truck, don't do much if you want more than that.

Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
I had the 882 casting heads on my old 355 with a slightly larger cam and was making about 300 HP but near 400 TQ. I'd say you are about the same.
It's been a while but i think it put down 230 WHP and 320 WTQ through a TH400 trans.

& 1.94/1.50115-17576 CC Chambers
Intake flow 150.8 CFM
Exhaust flow 91.1 CFM

Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
The heads are from a truck that produces more torque that horsepower. if the casting numbers are correct you have 76cc chamber. most hot rodders will mill these heads down to a 64cc chamber and "hogg" them out to put 2.02 intake valves and 1.60 exhaust valves. if that has been done the heads will flow very well. But your cam would be not letting your heads breath good. but to find out if any of this has been done you would have to take the heads off of the engine and measure the valves. Another important thing to know is what valve springs you are using and what seat pressure is on the springs. there is alot of variables that could make this engine a good hp producer. just speaking from experence, you should take off the oil pan and make sure all of your caps are torqed properly. if you don't know what you have, you should look through the engine to make sure that everything is good if you still have it out of the car. anyways, a good thing to do is to read up on what makes the best hp, bookstores are a good source for that. I bet I have made more questions that answers but hopefully I've helped somehow, good luck

Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
The cam is mild and the compression is most likely around 9.0 to 1. sounds like the engine maybe around 300 block hp. it would be a very reliable engine.

Assuming the worst, that your 1.94/1.50 heads are 882 or 624's, probably in the 300 HP range.

Re: HORSEPOWER HELP!!!!! WHAT HAVE I GOT?
The 882 heads are part of the reason the L82 Corvette barely made more than 200 net HP in the late 70s. They also love to crack around the exhaust valves.
