Anyone have a good idea to make more power in a 305 TBI?
Hey guys, I have a 91' Firebird with a weenie 305 TBI. Finally finishing school and looking to put a little more pop in the bird, any suggestions? I was going to do a 350 swap, but it seems like a headache! I think I would like to keep the engine I got, add heads, cam, intake and exhaust. Anyone know of a good combo of these parts? Will my stock TBI keep up (with open element air filter and higher injectors, 22#?)? Would a unit off a TBI 350 truck work better? I'm getting told a lot that a good 305 TBI can make a bird go low 14's, crazy or true? Please give me help you guys, I need it!

Check out ultimate TBI in the Tech Articles.
There's a lot you can do to a TBI motor.I have a 300 HP 350 crate motor in mine.Turbo City sells ported gm throttle bodies and adjustable fuel pressure regulators, and Holley makes big bore bodies,Edelbrock and Holley offer Intake Manifolds.Several companies/individuals can burn you a custom chip.Crane and others make computer-friendly camshafts.Headers, bigger cat and exhaust is always helpful.I did all my reaearch on this website before spending the money, and it really paid off.
The 350 throttle body is the same as the 305, only the injectors are different, and you
don't need bigger injectors yet.
Hope this helps.

the 22 pound injectors you talked about will SLOW the car down..haha..thats a TPI injector that you are talking about. the difference is that they have 8 (or 9) injectors. right now you probably have around 45 pound injectors. you can move up to 55s or even higher depending on your fuel needs.
what condition is the motor in? unless its in pretty good shape and has low miles, i would get a 350. you dont want to dump money into a 305 that will eventually crap the bed. unless you ae just planning on bolt ons that could eventually be switched to a 350.
you can get a TBI 305 into the 14s, but it takes some work. not necessarily a lot of money, just the right combo, and most importantly, the right tuning.

check out my web site for info about TBI and swapping it to a 350. check back often because i am in the middle of adding a lot of pages.

good ideas for a 305? Weld a chain on it, and give it with someone who needs a boat anchor. Swapping a 350 in place of the anemic TBI 305 is the best idea here. I am just putting the finishing touches on my 91 rs, having recently installed a fresh 350. Honestly, the little car has been a pleasure to work on. I couldn't have been more suprised. The problems were few. (Other than with the edelbrock tb intake, which I had to modify, and mess with.) There is a bolt on the passenger side of the block in the back which is a pain, and the emissions stuff makes removing the valve covers a chore, so breaking in the cam, and adjusting the valvetrain is a job, but other than that I am tickled pink. We have one more day of work before we are done, and I will let you know how it goes.
low 14s are very doable(without NOS). Anymore than that and you're charting new 305 TBI territory.

Alright, so assume I dump the 305 and put in a 350, will any 350 block work? I could easily find a 350 block in a parts yard around here for cheap, and build it using new parts after that. Will that work? Am I gonna have any kind of goofy engine managment problems? Where could I find a computer that would work on a 350? Thanks again for the help guys.
ok, the swap is easy. You need to get a custom chip burned, and you need to make sure it is a newer block, I forget what makes them different but it is important. We faxed our setup to hypertech, and they needed some codes off the ecm to make it compatible. I don't know how radical you can go, but it is my understanding that they can make a chip for anything, but if your cam is to big, you will have to worry about emissions. really, this was my first swap on a newer car, and it went just as smoothly as putting the 350 back in the starfire. The 350 blocks are nearly identical to the 305 blocks, arent they?
