3.8 liter turbo swap question..

I did some thinking and ditched the 406 SB idea because it was just going to be too expensive. But I've already started towards a 3.8 turbo conversion. I'm planning on just swapping in the engine, tranny, rear from a grand national/t-type/TTA. I've already got the 200r4 tranny($150 with under 100k on it and runs smooth) and working on getting a rear end. Does anyone see where I'm going to run into any problems with this setup? I know about having to delete the AC in order for the Buick motor to fit in the engine bay. Will I need to get the motor/tranny mounts from a turbo regal? I'm pretty sure I'll need the computer from one also right? Any info is appreciated greatly.

Yes, you'll need the computer from the GN. You'll also need a custom crossmember/TA mount. Spohn sells one that's supposed to work.

Go to turbobuick.com and ask that question on the message board. They will be able to answer your question. How will a g-body rear end swap with a camaro?

G body rear wont work, not without extensive mods anyway, also check out www.gnttype.org in the for sale sec, find parts to mod it and someone had the crossmember for sale there too.

don't forget things like a vaccuum motor, etc for the heater control system, and stuff like that. You're gonna need either a vaccuum pump that will have enough to handle the power brakes, get a hydraulic power assist, or simply get rid of the power brake option. hmm...the crossmemeber someone already mentioned, the rears won't interchange, so you will be in the same boat as before for any type of strong rear housing, and custom exhaust will be definitely mandatory, unless of course, you can find a totaled 3.8L GTA that you can get parts off of. short of that and some wiring interfaces, you should be good to go.

Thanks for the input I appreciate it. What rear end does everyone think I should go with that would fit the camaro? Would my stock rear hold up? I hear the torque from the grand national drivetrain will tear it to shreds but i've got about 380 ft lbs of torque coming out of my car right now. But I also want something that can handle some abuse. I'm looking forward to hearing some suggestions from you guys.

well, if it were me, I'd stick with the stocker for now, until it breaks. They can handle a fair amount of power, and 380ft lb is no slouch that you have right now. The turbo car may have higher peak torque, but since it's a turbo, it will come on once the car is moving. Most rear damage occurs from a standstill, where the force on the ring and pinion is greatest. Short of that, you're best bet once that breaks, you can get either a 12 bolt or 9inch from guys like Moser engineering and I think Strange that will bolt in. They are some coin(~1500 bucks, w/brakes usually), but are well worth it in the durablity department. If you are good at fabrication, you might be able to save a couple hundred by adding the bracketry yourself to a rear you build. In all honesty though, the pre-packaged set-ups with choice of gears, brakes, and prewelded mounts makes it a pretty tough choice to overlook. hope that helps.

Get a vacume block for a TTA(still avalible)and you won't have a problem with heat or brakes.

Use a 200-R4 from a GN or T-Type,all others(except for the TTA)are not the same. The GN one is stronger to boot.

I'm doing this swap right now but using TTA heads not GN heads(infact I just dropped the motor in the other day).I keep progress and info on my website or email me if I can help.
