buying an engine now

Well I been looking for 350s in my local area and I found one pretty cheap. He doesn't know much about it other than it runs. Its in a jeep right now and said he wont pull it till he knows someone wants it. Im correct in saying that all 350s will work in our cars right just some have more potential for more power. He said it is a stock 2 barrel thats on it tight now and that because of that it is a 2 bolt main. Is that true? If it is how much horsepower can a 2 bolt take because most I plan on doing for a while is cam intake and carb. maybe putting it in the 300 hp rang. Thanks for your help.

no it is not true, the only way to tell is to take the oil pan off and look or some times you can find sites that will tell you if have the casting number but they arnt always true. and to get into the 300hp range you will need more then a cam and intake. and are you sure that its not a 318 or a 360 dodge motor? i know that they can be swaped into jeeps cause my friend is working on his right now but he might say that its a 350 but then it turns out not to be.

A 2-bolt can take a lot of power.

If you're building a performance engine, plan on heads, cam, pistons, and intake at a minimum.

thank you for your help. I found a 350 tbi engine that came out of a 93 chevy truck thats a 4 bolt main not a vortec engine tho. I think I will probably go with that one that way I dont have to switch to carb yet.
I planned on doing the whole engine... with the eagle cast lower end kit and the jegs top end kit with vortec heads. I just wanted a good noticable diference from the 305 to this setup. I am going on a "cruise" with a whole bunch of imports and I want to show them up a bit with some good ole american power. basically just like 20-30 cars going down some crazy back roads in the hills of indiana. but should be fun.

Check the "budget 350" sticky in the top section of the TBI forum. Good info for getting good power out of factory and aftermarket parts.

(Correct, '93 is not Vortec.)

thats if you are buying a vortec 350 so that doesnt really help me on the build. Wasnt there a way to get the stock 305 heads remilled or something to get pretty good performance?
