motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
Getting everything together to drop a pontiac 400 into my trans am but I can't find anyone who has conversion motor mounts. I thought I read that motor mount location will be different for a pontiac motor...Am I wrong? Will it bolt to the stock SBC motor mounts in their current location? If not does anyone know where I can get some mounts for this application? Thanks

Re: motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
I read that thread and there is very little reference to motor mounts. Other than a link to a place called indian conversions. A link that is dead. Ive done my reading, this is the only thing im fuzzy on. Id rather buy direct bolt on mounts instead of welding some in.

at this time no one makes them. you have to modify/make them yourself.

Seems to be one of the projects that the builder is out having so much fun they never check back or it was a bust or they wrecked.
Seen a couple of Buick 455 build 3rd gen's and they always go MIA at the end.

Every time I try to go to the chief many horses web site I'm redirected to some BS search engine.

Re: motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
I just found some Indian Adventures conversion motor mounts at pontiacgroup.com. They're $90 though! I can't see paying that much for $5 worth of metal. lol. I still might just make my own. Here's the link to the block mounts, http://pontiacgroup.com/engineparts/blockpart/10776.htm

Re: motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
Whatever it may say, those are solid mounts for a chevy engine to go in any vehicle. Those mounts wouldn't fit my Buick, Olds, or Pontiac engines.
I think you'd be best off using late 2nd Gen mounts to put your engine in. It will get you the closest and if you have to redrill or slot the crossmember for your lowers then so what?

Re: motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
I actually ended up using a conversion kit from yearone that I had lying around. I used the engine mounting brackets from the RW81 kit HERE. And made my own engine support bars. I also got rid of the stock motor mounts and bolted up a pair that were made for a 2nd gen, they're a tiny bit different and it made things just a little easier. I've been taking pictures as I go and will be posting a thread on the whole swap once the engine is compltete. I didn't want this to be a big ordeal since I'm trying to get the restoration on my 79 complete. So now I've just been shifting money back and forth between the 2 car, so it's slow going.

Re: motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
If I was just purchasing parts and not fabbing them up myself, I would start with this kit:
http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/f...hid=413AG51516 (the TB389M at the bottom)
The RW81 kit for the Olds has the plates that are already drilled so that you can move the engine brackets to several different positions if you were using an Olds V8
The mounts and frame brackets are for the 70's Pontiac V8, with the bars already made to bolt to the side of the older 60's Pontiac blocks. You can use that flat plate to re-drill the holes for the mounts and then you can put those engine brackets wherever you want to match your rubber lowers. You can bolt your Pontiac rubber lowers to the frame in the same place that the Chevy lowers go and adjust the uppers to sit on them. That should maintain the proper height of the engine as well.

Re: motor mount conversion for pontiac V8
that's the one I had in mind when I was making up my own adapters. I didn't want to sink all that money into something that would take me an hour to fab up in my garage. But if you've got the money that is definatly the way to go.
