What size Engine and year do i really have?

Good afternoon gentleman,
I recently purchased a 82 Z28 camaro about three months ago and been slowly piecing it back together. What i have learned with no absolute certainty is that the Engine has been swapped out from the original 82 305 4bbl Quadrajet. It now has i think a 84 or 86 305 with a Edelbrock 1406 carb. The previous owner thinks it is a 86 305.

My question is how can i be for certain what damn Engine is in this car?
Year? Size? So i can finish piecing it back together?

Thanks in advance!

Oh i did look at the castings markings list but it is like greek to the novice guy like me... The acronynms are greek rather...

Take the casting marks and plug them into google. That will get you a basic idea. There behind the drivers side head on the block surface.

Casting marks are only good for telling what the block originally started out as. They won't tell you if it's been bored or etc obvouisly.

Small blocks are the same in size on the outside, so it shouldn't cause any issues with external stuff.

Same size, yes. But '86 was the first year for the 1-piece rear main seal, which requires a different flywheel or flexplate than pre-'86.

Re: What size Engine and year do i really have?

I Cannot see any casting numbers outside of what is stamped on the Intake manifold Stamped behind carb
(14057053)
(GM CFM)
(43)

Fireing order is stamped in front of carb
(18436572)

Outside those markings the Engine is installed and i cant see the markings behind and below the Driverside head to see any other markings.

The Transmission is a 5 speed Manual with Hydrolic clutch if that helps.

They're a pain to see, but they're the only ones that will tell you anything.
