Re: My Engine project, more pics
Thanks,
I have owned the car since 1993, it was my daily driver for 2 years then it was relagated to "toy" status. The 383 was installed summer of 2000. it was alot of fun, plenty of passes at the drag strip and it still ran perfectly.
I sold it last fall, the 421 SBC was 5 years in the making.
with the 383 removed I dissasembled the whole front end cleaned and repainted the firewall, subframe, etc. New tubular k member, new a arms, all new suspsension, converted to manual gear box, removed the heater core and a/c delete fan box, to make some more room. New stainless steel brake lines front to rear, new rotors, calipers , New fuel lines.
new motor mounts, fasteners changed to stainless steel when feasible
The 421 has 18 degree brodix heads, solid roller cam, 12.75:1 compression, and 950 CFM Carb modified to run E85. On the dyno we also ran the shop carb and 110 race fuel. This engine made the same power on Both.. actually made a couple more HP on E85. 656 HP not too shabby for a street / strip car. I can pick up some more HP going to bigger CAM but then it's a full time race car.

In my book 650HP is a success however you look at it. (I presume that's at the wheels so..around 720hp at the crank.)

Dynoed on a stand... engine was not in the car.
But my guy's dyno is very conservative.. the sign on the yno room door reads "NO CRY BABIES"
We did it to run the motor, break in the cam, set timing, baseline power curve. check for leaks, etc.
I am in the ballpark but there will be some fine tuning for sure. most likely just the carb jetting.
The timeslips never lie, so we will see.
The 383 best 1/4 mile was 12.16 at 111.42. It was a very consistant 12 second car, on the same dyno my 383 made 465 HP
This new 421 I will be very happy with low 11s / hightens... any faster and I need to deal with more safety regs at the track and that is money I do not want to spend right now.

That's still a stupid amount of power. Especially since you aren't using a power adder. Very nice!

190 more horspower than the 383 and I took some more weight out of it.
amazing how all the little stuff add up...
the tubular k member and a-arms weigh almost half the OEM did
The power steering box is another dead weight compared to the manual unit, which is about half the weight.
not to mention the hoses, pump, and the serpentine brackets. the 383 also had iron heads the Brodix units are aluminum.
I was weighing all the parts but when I realized I was removing more weight than what I started with I stopped. I probably took another 200# out of the car. which hopefully offsets the added weight of the 8 point rol cage. I will weigh the car when I am finished.
I will say not having the A/C, heater, blower motor, and power steering really freed up some room in the engine bay. I refuse to gut the interior though, at that point it just looks like another race car.

Beautiful work. Wish I had the time and patience to do likewise. Kind of embarrasses me to bring "Ugly Betty" out when you guys are around.
On the other hand, "Ugly Betty" can make me pretty proud as well. See the performance details of Berlinetta #1 with the untuned LS1/4L60E in my vBGarage.

Personally I like both, when it's not a daily driver you can take the time doll it up.

Im in the planning stages of doing a 427ci sbc with brodix 18 degree heads for my 86, similar to yours, but pump gas. Already have a block, crank and rods. (Dart Little M, Callies and Crower) Who makes those headers?

Stahl also makes spread port 18 degree heads, they are little less expensive but I did not like the fact you have to notch the wheel wells to get # 7 #8 to fit. You also cannot use power steering with the Stahl headers.

Anyone know of a good cleaning agent to use for the coolant over flow and washer pump reseviour?
I was thinking to make a bleach / water solution and soak them for a few days in a 5 gallon bucket, then rinse with a pressure washer.
