T56 in 1982 Camaro - Horizontal Alignment of the 3 bolt slots in transmission mount?

Hello All,

I've bought the Spohn LT1-T56 crossmember for my 1982 Camaro. After bolting down all three bolts into the transmission mount, the transmission seems to be set towards the passenger side of the car. There are three holes in the mount and three slots in the crossmember. If I used only 1 or two bolts instead of all three, I could shift it more to the drivers side and get it centered - but what way has everyone done it and what way is "Correct?"

I've attached pictures to explain, if you look up at the shifter base you'll see it appears not centered against the transmission tunnel. This was originally an automatic car, so the cutout does not exist and I can't use it as a reference and am trying to avoid making a cutout any larger than necessary. I searched but could only find mentions of difficulties lining up the crossmember-to-frame bolts. And yes, I know it is borderline necessary to add the third hole to the frame for mounting the crossmember - I will eventually get to that, I am just trying to get everything lined up.

Thanks for any help. Don't mind the 3D printed trans mount - I made that because there wasn't enough clearance to get the actual mount in there without a cutout in the trans tunnel, so I created that piece a little less tall to mock everything up for alignment so I know where to cut the hole in the trans tunnel.

Looking at this again, it appears maybe this is some kind of illusion; I am distracted by the flat section of the stamped metal where the top of the transmission (shifter base) meets the trans tunnel, but there is no guarantee that flat section is centered in it's own placement.

Does anyone have pictures of their LT1 T56 transmission w/ spohn crossmember mounted in a thirdgen showing where it's placement is and if all three holes were used?

Maybe put the shifter in and look how center it is from the top?

Is that a solid trans mount?

Maybe it looks different because a T5 is clocked to the left slightly and the T56 isn't?

There are a few things I could try, but was hoping someone here has pictures of their T56 in a car that was equipped with manual from the factory, and I could see where the trans sits in relation to the shifter cutout hole.

The mount looks like a solid mount but it is just a 3D printed piece just a little less tall than the actual mount because I can't fit the transmission in place without the transmission shifter hole cut out, and am trying to determine where it needs to be before cutting.

A possible explanation, 9 years ago, I bought a hedman lsx swap kit for my ‘84. It had the engine and trans mounts. At the time, it was advertised as a swap kit for the 82-93 f-body. Now it’s advertised for the 83-92 f-body. Typos or does the “3” mean anything? I don’t know, but maybe the ‘82 model has differences related to trans mount. Obviously 93 is 4th gen. The current kit doesn’t include the ‘82 model, so that makes me think the typo was corrected and that the kit won’t work for an ‘82. Same could be true for your trans mount.

Also, I bought an LT1 T56, and I had it converted to an LS style by Texas Speed and Performance. The only change I noticed was the shaft and front plate. I thought the LT and LS T56 used the same trans mount?
