WTF is up with this
WTF is up with this
A friedn of mine just looked at an 84 TA it has a 305 V8 in it and instead of having a single intermediate pipe it has 2 pipes running next to each other ,then appears to have 3 mufflers in the rear . Is this normal for this year , I've heard of some 82 and 83 models having this exhaust , is it a first design , or just a bad idea by GM . And how much is this car being choked out with that exhaust ,seems like it would be very restictive to have 2 smaller pipes then just one larger one.

Yes that is stock with the 2 mufflers. They went to the 1 muffler with 2 outlets in 84.
The thing inbetween the mufflers is a resonator.
Here are some idle thoughts I had on the system, if you are interested.
Cut and paste is wonderfull. The 1982 V-8 cars had that exhaust system. I think some 83's had it also.
The system routes the same as the other f-bodies do.
Mine has a 2.5" cross over, but where the bends are it wrinkles, into a catalytic converter on the right side, then a 2.25 intermediate pipe to just in front of the rear axle, then Y's into a pair of 1.75" tubes that are pretty much parallel over the axle and into the 2.25" resonator between the two mufflers, then out through 2.25" tail pipes.
It does have some drawbacks though:
1. The crossover isn't mandrel bent, and it does that T thing on the right side.
2. The Cat needs better flow. (what factory cat couldn't use more flow?)
3. The I pipe should be larger. 2.5" minimum.
4. The over axle Y-pipe should be 2"
5. The resonator should probably be larger.
6. The mufflers have 1.75" inlet and outlet. Way too small.
Sorry it's so long but you asked

Mine's even MORE weird! I'm pretty sure this is a stock system too:
Mine is the same, i-pipe to the Y over the axle, but both outlets of the Y go into the little pipe in between the mufflers, (not a resonator, just pipe) into the mufflers each side just like the pic above, with the 2 outlets either side.
It really has an awesome sound, nice and deep, throaty too, but I'm sure it's very restrictive. That's the next thing on the list to upgrade!

Mine still had the stock exhaust on and I couldn't believe what I saw for the exhaust.. I mean, wtf were they thinking?? LOL Sounded ok at idle but my friends were saying, you couldn't hear a thing when getting on it going down the road.

my buddy's lg4 86 Iroc is even more screwed up. it has the true duals from the factory (their is only one cat, but it has 4 holes) some one added cherry bombs, one near the axle on one, one behind the axle on the other, THEN....there are two mufflers, one right after the axle, and the other at the end of the other pipe (about 4 inches of tail pipe on that one), this system is F**Ked up to say the least

cherrybombs AND mufflers?!
Who puts cherrybombs and mufflers on a car together... i was under the impression that cherry bombs were designed to be loud... mufflers obviously quiet things...
I'm beyond comprehension on this one.

Wow this is all news to me. I never thought thirdgens ever came with any form of duals. Does anyone have any more pictures of the stock piping? I'd love to see them.

I just got a digital camera, so know I just have to hunt him down and take some pics, if you took out the 4 hole cat, and put two pipes in then the pipes would never ever touch, ayla true duals, pipes are pea shooters though
