Which Headers do you recommend?

I'm looking into an exhaust setup for the future, but need some help with headers. I was thinking Edelbrock TES #6872(1), but I've been reading some threads and rust seems to be a problem. Is this a problem for the for the chrome plated ones also? I was also looking into Hooker Super Comp shorties #2055. SLP is also very nice, but from what I've been reading in this board, SLP's are a pain to install. Also, the SLP's are the priciest of the bunch. What I'm looking for a nice set of headers that will last a long time, make power, and not give me too hard a time to install. Basically the best bang for the buck. I don't mind spending around the price range of the TES or Hookers. I've heard that Hookers make more power, but will they last w/o rust? Any info is appreciated...

what size engine do you have
if you have a 305 go with the flow tech headers and y pipe
part #'s are 11102 for headers and 11102-y for the y pipe
they and great and if to have a 305 get them you will not be disapointed
if you have a 350 then het hooker

89Blue TA, I know about MAC headers, but the reviews I've read for them haven't been very good.

jerflash, as of now I have a 305, but all the work I'm planning on doing won't be on the 305. Basically I'm in the planning/calculating stages of my build-up and I've already decided on swapping in a 350. I've got pretty much all the suspension mods planned out, now I'm searching engine. I'm close to set on several areas, but with exhaust manifolds, there are several choices, which is why I posted this thread. I was split between Hooker and Edelbrock, but I'm starting to lean towards Hooker, since after all, headers are what they're known for and specialize in (doesn't necessarily mean they are better).

But I just got to thinking...I've read that SLP's are a pain to install, but this is with the engine in the car. When I do my engine swap, I'm obviously gonna swap in all the performance parts before putting the engine in the car, which would obviously include the headers. Would this eliminate the install problem of the SLP headers or do you have to install the headers after the engine is in the car?

thanks for the help!

I installed the shorties w/o y-pipe on the engine, then installed the engine. It went in with no problems. Can't say the same for certain with SLP, but just looking at them, I don't know why it would be any different.

It's been awhile since I've heard it, but part of the SLP clearance problems seem to be old motor mounts. Might be a good idea to replace them when the engine is out.

only reson i say the flowtechs is that they are the cheapest headers on the market at $200 for the headers and y-pipe and they fit better then modt of the more expencive brands out there
there only downfall is that they only mak them in 1.5 primarey
if they made them bigger they would be the company i would use on averything but i would get them coated

The Flowtechs are my pick as well. For $370 you get them coated, with a y-pipe and they are emissions legal. Regardless of what a lot of people think, the Flowtechs will work just fine for your 350, unless you really have a torque monster. Yes the 1 3/4 inch primaries will flow better, but it's negligable until you start getting up there in HP and Torque numbers.

I have the hedman t.e.m.s [tubular exhasut manifold system] shorty style headers on my 305. They were prety easy to install they also come with a y-pipe. I found mine new on ebay for 200.00 and they are ideal if you plan on keeping the emisions becasue they have air tubes and a bung for the o2 sensor. As for the coating on them it was horrible before I installed them I sanded them down and got a quart of Eastwood Hi-Temp header paint and re coated them. They look great and its been about 2.5 months since I put em in and the coating is holding strong. Jegs part number 500-68481 - $309.99
