Recommend an Exhaust

Ok Exhaust guys its time to help me pick out an awesome
exhaust. I personally don't know to much about them
so thats why I am coming to the experts on this board.
The future plan is a 350 TPI or 383 stroker. But that
will be awhile. Right now its just a 305 TBI stock. I want
an exhaust that is going to work for the new engine
down the road....

Please recommend an exhaust and tell me why you
like it.

Are duels an option? I have heard it is possible...?

Another popular one I hear is flowmaster....

here is my car...

A pic is worth a 1000 words. Hooker cat-back and some SLP headers. Though if money is an issue Hooker headers. Sound clip of my setup is in my sig.

I don't have to have smog legal headers. I plan on pulling the cat and that stuff when I get to it. I also want to pull all that smog crap they put on in 89 but I have heard if u remove it
on some the check engine light comes on all the time cause
the computer knows its supposed to be there??? thats what I am worried about....

If you pull the smog stuff and get a code you can have a chip burned to fix that. Since you don't have smog you could get some Hooker comp headers with the 3" outlets and run dual exaust.

Oops, forgot about duals. As long as cops don't bother you about the exhaust exiting before the rear tires, though that may only be inforced by emissions, not sure.

I like the sound of my Raven system. Under $350 installed from Midas. Sounds deep and rumbly at idle and killer at WOT. Thats with a 350 TPI though, I've never heard it on a 305 TBI.

I know there is a law in MD and I believe other states that the exhaust has to run out the back, due to fumes entering the car.

highhat thanks I am looking forward to see how them duels turn out...

Another thing I thought of guys is I am going to probably lower my car. Duels are probably out of the question. And another thing is they would probably cost more to install with the custom work correct? I understand that a regular cat back is great for street racers/cruising. I ain't going to take this car to the strip or make it an all out race car....

That hooker sound clip of Mark's sounds awesome...

I guess I Need to do more research on these and get prices....

I didn't really plan on getting headers since I plan to redo the engine down the road into a 350 TPI or 383 stroker. WOuld those hooker heads still work on a 350 or 383 ? I would hate to buy them for a 305 TBI and not work on other engines when I redo it....

Anything that bolts to a 305 will bolt to a 350.

Are you saying that SLP is making the Loudmouth for thirdgens now? I checked their website but I didn't see it there. I've been putting off buying an exhaust system, hoping that they would make the Loudmouth available for thirdgens but I dont think it's happened yet. I guess I'll be buying Hooker if they dont make it soon. Please tell me they're making it!

they aren't making it but 4thgens aren't very different from 3rgens underneath(behind the firewall). If you could get a 3" pipe from the cat to the end of the tranny, the 4thgen system should be cool.

4thgen Loudmouth:

3rdgen non-Loudmouth:

see how the pipe turns to go to the cat?

Please explain, I dont understand 100%, it's kinda late here. (dozes off and falls out of chair) If I took a Loudmouth system to a reputable exhaust shop they should be able to bend a pipe and put it in, right? I guess I'll have to upgrade to a 3" cat too since no exhaust shop around here will do a no-cat setup. But please explain what you mean about the pipe!!

the pipe on the 3rgen is longer and has to bend to the right of the car to get to the cat. The 4thgen system has a Y pipe after the tranny that has a pipe coming from each side of the engine which makes it much shorter pipe to the muffler.
3rdgen headers with Y pipe:

4thgen Y pipe

So all that has to be done is to have a pipe bent that will bend right so it can hook up to the cat? That sounds easy enough. One more question, are you happy with those tips you have? I thought the new Zs had a 2.25 or a 2.5" tailpipe. How could I get it to fit a 3" pipe? Those look great. Thanks!!!!

I measured the pipes to the tips to be 2.2". I've heard you can cut the ends off the tips to make them slip on a 2.5" pipe but I haven't seen proof of that. I doubt you could get them to fit 3" pipe unless you split the 3" into 2 smaller pipes like the loudmouth does and like f-body catbacks do.

You could get a 3" intermediate pipe and maybe have a muffler shop make the rest of the exaust to copy the loudmouth.
