whats the best sounding muffler?
GLASSPACKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW, many people are going to flame me for saying that but that's just because they haven't heard a good engine with glasspacks. And yes some actually flow good. They're very inexpensive also.

I personally like the SLP and Flowmaster mufflers. I have had Flowmaster and currently have an SLP kit on my Formula that I think sounds great.

I have personally had stock GM; Dynomax Super Turbo; Flowmaster Force II; and Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on my car. I think the Aerochamber sounds the best.

Personally I prefer SLP (I have an SLP cat-back). I have yet to hear a thirdgen sound good with glass-packs though. I would either go with SLP or Borla (flowmasters are good but 90% of the cars out there have them! haha)
Sound wise, go with the SLP. Also I think the SLP flows better than the flowmaster, though I don't have any #'s to back that up.

I'm a big fan of no muffler at all, but I have a Dynomax SuperTurbo and it turns some heads. Aerochambers are real good sounding too.
It's the muffler that talks, but the cam that sings...

Ok guys sorry. I am looking for something to put on ym 79 T/A. I have flowmaster 40's serious but I jsut don't really like them. i want something a little quieter with a different sound. sorry
I'll tell you what sounded fukin awesome though, my friends 86 Camaro with a built 350. It had dual exhaust with glasspacks that exited before the rear tires. It sounded mean as holy hell! Better than my other friends 69 402 BBC Chevelle with dual 3" flowmasters.
JC Whitney also sells some descent glasspacks. Even up to 3" I.D. I've ordered one from them before and was pleased with it.
My car has a Thrush Glasspack now though. It sounds great.

I've got a 2 chamber, 40 series single in/out muffler. I love the sound. I swear the muffler has become deeper and louder over the year that I've had it. The baffles must rust out or something. It was quieter and more metallic sounding then, now it's deep with no trace of that metallic Flowmaster sound that everyone hates, myself included. Actually now that I think about it, it DOES have that metallic sound when the car is cold, but after the car has warmed up, the sound totally changes. Maybe it has something to do with the cat heating up, because when I had a gutted cat, the Flowmaster setup sounded very metallic, and after adding a high flow cat, the sound goes away after the car has warmed up. But overall, I like the way it sounds. Loud, deep, fairly obnoxious.

I got the hooker cat back, and i really like it.. Give it a few weeks to break in, and it sounds niiice. My friend has the edelbrock on his car... It also sounds good, but I like the hooker better..
I think the best way I can describe it is "hollow" sounding... then again, I did rm my cat when i put the exhaust on....so that may have changed the sound.
But the quad tips that came with the kit are great!

I have the Hooker cat back. The thing sounds awesome. I put it on about a month ago. I still had the cat on and it sounded good, but I was lookin for more. Last week I took the cat off and made a test pipe for it and put it on. Now it is even better. It is at least 3x louder and sweeter. I highly recomend it, and I payed only $208 for it.

Well, i right now have straigh pipes out the back with a cat. and it is LOUD. i am lucky to have not had cops pull me over for being loud. if i had any kind of cam or if i had headers i will have to put a muffler on. but right now, my bud heard me step on it and he was a 1/4 mile away.
but i like the sounds of the SLP (what was on the car before) and the hooker aerochamber...

Uhggg....glasspacks?!?!? I put a pair of glasspacks on my Grand Prix right after the motor swap and let me tell you, it sounded like TOTAL ****!. Even the stock OEM turbo style muffler's sound way better. The glasspacks were loud but thats about it, just loud and ****ty sounding, didn't even sound like a V8, just a really ****ty BRAP BRAP BRAP , and no exhaust leaks either. I'm debating at this very moment what to replace the stock turbo mufflers with....3inch 2 chamber flowmasters, 2.5inch 69 Z28 style chambered tubes, 3inch Dynamax Magnum Bullits, 2.5inch Magnaflows, Flowtech Warlocks, ARRRGGGG!! THERE ARE TOO ****ING MANY TO CHOOSE FROM!!!!

Looks like I should have read this first before I bought an exhaust. I had a 2 chamber dual exit Flowmaster on my 92 Z28 350 and decided I wanted a change(rust holes helped to quicken that decision). I Couldnt afford the Borla and I heard good things about Dynomax and I went with their cat back set up and Im regretting it. Althought Dynomax has alittle more bass to it, its alot quieter so it looks like it wont be too long before Im going back to Flowmaster or taking my chances with SLP like I should have in the beginning, cant be any quieter than what I have now.

I have a Flowmaster 80 series on my 88 GTA/350 T.P.I and it sounds very mean and aggresive. Although I have heard many good things about the SLP cat-back, and I have heard it on a IROC-Z and it sounded good. Also the Edelbrock cat-back is a good system as well and I plan on purchasing it in the near future.

I have had the flowmaster 80, and 30 series, and the hooker aerochamber, all sounded cool to me, the 30 series is the most unique (wicked, racy sound) but in overall, I would have to go with the hooker, it just plain sounds fast....nuff said

I got a Flowmaster muffler for my IROC. It's a 40 or 50 series, but doesn't sound all that great. It's not as loud as it should be and has that hollow sound. Sounds good only after I've been driving for like 30 minutes. Eveyone's been talking about Hooker Aerochambers but they are not available in this ****hole I live in. The flowmaster did make an improvement in power though. Does any body have a soundfile of the Aerochamber?

I got the Dynomax and i liked the sound I just wish it was ALOT louder. It was a vast improvement though, over the stock muffler. I wished I had gone for the Hooker set though cuz ive heard that they are louder. But now it does not make a difference cuz my exhaust system was crushed not even a week after i got it on in the accident that totalled my car,
I just recieved my "american thunder" series cat-back for my 86 in the mail. Its single in, dual out, and the dual outs are 3"s also, does anyone have any experience with this system. Comments, suggestions?? It will be behind 1 5/8 slp headers and a 3" cat-co cat.

My choices for best sounding muffler:
1.No muffler - sounds like a good catback with headers
2. Chambered exhaust
3. Hooker areochamber
I have the no muffler setup and it sounds pretty good an dis pretty loud as well.
The chambered exhaust sound sreally good on my friends 1974 corvette, but I never thought about putting it in a thirdgen. Then I saw an article in Super Chevy I believe about a "Berger Camaro SS." It is a 2001 Camaro SS that is altered by Berger, which is the dealer. They did a few performance mods, and instead of the stock exhaust it comes with two chambered mufflers. They sit in the stock location and kind of zig zag and come out with dual tips in the back. Its a really cool looking setup and they said that it produced the best sound by far.
As far as the Hooker muffler goes... I have only heard one on a video and it sounded really good. People always praise them here so I bet they are as good as people say.

I have the Dynomax Cat back with the Super Turbo muffler and it's just too damn quiet! I made it louder then I deleted the cat, but it's still not loud enough. I hope the headers help out a little.

I can already feel the heat from the flames but I gotta speak on this. I've personally heard three systems which sounded good.
1) No muffler (If still using CAT's). I had this on my first IROC cause I was too poor for anything else and the stock muffler rotted out. A buddy of mine who'd a 5.0 disciple had headers and no cats on his and complimented me several times on how mine sounded. I quote him: "That's the only late model slowmaro that I've ever heard that sounds good."
2) My best friend (89IrocN2O) has a weird set up that sounds real good. He removed the cat, put a magnum glass-pack in the mid-pipe (runs parallel to the driveshaft), next is an exhaust cut out, and at the end is a flowmaster 80 series muffler. It sounds mean when the exhaust is uncapped. I would personally use an SLP stainless glass pack or a dynomax bullet style muffler with 3" pipe and eliminate everything else back. With headers and a good cam this should sound even better.
3) The absolute baddest whoop *** mustang-eatin wicked exhaust I ever heard on a third gen was on my brother-in-law's '84 Z that had a mild 327 with headers and a 3.73 gear. From the headers it went back seperate and ended at 2 super turbo mufflers mounted about where the front seats are. I remember that they were held up by brackets that were welded to the floor pan. It sounded wicked. It didn't even have an H-pipe or expensive mufflers. The cam wasn't even too radical. I wouldn't recommend this one for anyone who lives on rough roads or goes over alot of speed bumps.
Whatever you do don't buy into flowmaster's crap. I bought their force II and my car lost some low end compared to the 3" Dynomax system and didn't sound as good either (only lounder). Most of the cat-backs just make our cars soundl like a full size GM truck with a muffler job. Come on people, dare to be different. Hell, If you gotta use a cat back for ease of installation reasons that's fine, but try Magnaflow. JUST NOT FLOWMASTER. That's all we need is one more F-body that sounds just like the others. FWIW.

I've heard the 80 series (American Thunder) flowmaster systems. I'm still not impressed with them. I'd really like to hear the magnaflow systems. If anybody gets one PLEASE submit a sound file. Thanks.
The American Thunder catback doesn't use an 80 series muffler, it uses a 40 series one. 80 series mufflers sound like a$$.

Fella's, I've heard all the different flowmaster systems on 3rd-gens. I always heard that the single outlet flowmaster Force II systems were a 40 or 50 series muffler and that the American Thunder used the same 80 series muffler that they also sell seperately. I looked on their site and I can't find a 40 series Transverse muffler, anyways it's irrelevant to me. I ain't heard one that wasn't metallic. They all sound like crap to me (IMO). The best design I personally heard was the headers with a shorty dual exhaust as I described in my first reply. It's true duals, it's short, it don't have a lotta bends, it works, and it's not this crappy "Y pipe" crap that came on our cars. Later, Dwain "Draino" Brammer
