I have a 305 TPI and I just installed an exhaust system. I have a high-flow cat and flowmaster. It sounds really good and there's definately an improvement in performance. My friend has a '92 305 TBI with flowmaster and no cat. I don't hear any difference, in fact, IMO mine sounds better and the muffler hasn't broken in all the way. If I were you, I would put a high-flow cat on. From what I've learned, there's really not much difference in performance but more diff in sound. Depending on where you live, you'll need cats to pass the emissions test. Also, I know the world is polluted but don't contribute into making it any worse. We can make this world a better place
The is only one drawback to a high flow cat, that after time it will get clogged, much like the OE ones do, and then you will lose performance. I would just gut it and put a piece of pipe inside it.

Will a high-flow cat pass inspection?
