Magna-Flow Exhaust

Kevin, Tom and anyone else.

Is anyone using a Magna-Flow exhaust system or part of on their 89 L98 IROC or anything else for that fact? Just trying to find out some info on them and how they perform......I understand tha ttheir components are SST and the mufflers have no back pressure, no baffles etc......

TIA,

Bob,

I've had a Magnaflow muffler on both my Z28's for over three years. It has a true 3-inch inlet and opposite 2-1/2" outlets. It is a straight through design -- no baffles.

On my stock 305 TPI 1987 Z28 convertible, it produces a nice, deep mellow tone that's slightly louder than the stock muffler. On my highly modified 305 TPI 1987 IROC-Z, it is LOUD!! The exhaust on this car consists of SLP 1-3/4" headers, dual cats and a custom fabricated 3-inch cat back. In fact, it is so loud that I'm going with the quieter Flowmaster. My best E/T was established with this muffler.

Based on my experience, I believe the tone you get is determined by the level of mods on your car.

I have a Magnaflow muffler on my IROC. It is the type that just replaces the stock muffler, single inlet, dual outlets. Recall on this car the inlet is on the passenger side, and you have outlets on both the driver and passenger sides. The only exhaust flow that goes through the muffler is the flow exiting on the driver side. It is a straight-through type. The exhaust that exits on the passenger side is just baffeled around in a U-turn direct from the inlet. Kinda like a cutout. If you get behind the car so you can hear both pipes in stereo, they sound totally different. The Driver side pipe is a low rumble, the passenger side pipe is much sharper and crisper since it essentially has no muffling action. It sounds good. At low throttle and gentle acceleration, it's not much louder than the stock muffler. It gets really loud above 3 grand when you got your foot into it. Lifetime warranty and very well made. I've noticed more top end power with this muffler compared to stock. Mileage is a tad better as well.

Magnaflow is pretty popular with the Mustang crowd because of the sound, and the fact that it's a straight through flow muffler producing bigger gains. They offer a "Magnapack" muffler option and it's EXTREMELY loud! We installed a system on my brother's 96 GT, and it's a very nice system. Very high quality components.

I had a magnaflow muffler on my 1993 Ford probe with a 3.5" tip. That helps no one. It sounded cool for a 4 cyl. American muscle all the way!

hndsm17 has a point though. No replacement for displacement. Anything less than a v-8 isn't enough (usually). American muscle all the way.
