restrictive y-pipe

i had a y-pipe made for my headers, the guy made it similar to the stock y-pipe but with a 2"(with a bend that is further restricting it) after the Y. it feels like it took away about 10-15hp after having the stock manifolds and y-pipe. i've gone to different shops and they all tell my that it isn't hurting much but they also don't want to do the work. they say that is the only way it can be done or you can't make a bend off the colector that wont hit the ground or they just say they wont do it. one even said its not hurting because it gets bigger as you go back(i'm not that stupid, i know a 3" catback does nothing if you have to go through a 2"OD pipe with a bend first). what do you guys think? will i feel any gain with a good y-pipe? if i felt a loss with the headers and restrictive y-pipe shouldn't i feel a gain with the a good y-pipe? the engine is a 283 at about 250-300hp and makes power to 6000(probably more than 6000 but i don't want to rev it that high). heres a pic of what i have, the picture makes it look a lot bigger than it is.

i hooked a fuel pressure guage up to the 02 sensor thing on the drivers side and reved it up in park. it came up to 7psi. thats a lot for exhaust back pressure isn't it? would that be about the same if i was to drive it? i don't have a long enough line and a conector without rubber on the header, so i can't drive it like that.

Have you taken a look at the other after market Y-pipes out there??? The idea is that the Y looks like a Y. The passenger and drivers side pipes stay seperate until they hit the Y, and where they hit the collector is between 2 and 1/4 and 3 inches. That is typically the way an aftermarket Y pipe is made, that thing that you have on there is probably no better than the stock connections.

Look into the hooker or edelbrock or anything besides the stock or stock look a like on summit or jegs. I think you should be able to find them on the board if you search for "aftermarket Y-Pipe".

P.S.- No cat=Good Cat

i know i need a better one, and mine is worse than stock. i'm probably going to get the hedmans but i'm not sure if they go behind or in front of the A-frame. if it goes behind, them i'm going to have to get a new oil pan. my question is how much do you think it is hurting me?

SLP makes a y-pipe but if your going to all that work you might as well get a set with headers also.

i might go with a flowtech y-pipe since thats what my headers are, its not much better than stock but it will still flow a lot more than mine. i might me able to get my money back for the y-pipe i had made, thats $100 and the flowtech is $90+shipping so it wouldn't cost much and would be a little better.

i hooked a fuel pressure guage to the 02 port on the drivers side and reved it in park and it went up to 7psi. thats a lot for backpressure and i don't know how much it goes up when i drive it, so a 1/2" bigger pipe wouldn't hurt.

how much do you think a better y-pipe will help?

BTW: has anyone ever gotten a good y-pipe made custom? i've gone to about 4 shops and none of them will do anything.

I'm running Flowtechs, and I have the custom ypipe you're looking for. I'll email you the pics if you want. The Flowtech y looks identical to what you have - meaning its ***. I bought a Flowmaster Scavenger Y-pipe(dual2 1/2 into 3") and had a exhaust shop bend up two tubes to put it where the cat was. I even welded a flange on the end that is the same as factory, that way I could bolt up any cat-back. If bought the y-pipe and a local shop bent up all the pipes and welded it in place for me. It's really a beautiful exhaust for a single set-up.

later, justin...
